Found some treasure

I found a prop while spearfishing last fall and just realized it's been sitting in my basement all this time. It's a 4 blade stainless steel prop, the only markings on it are a 26 P.

Can anyone tell me what size motor this would work on?
What it might be worth?

It's in really good shape with a few minor nicks on the blades.

Thanks

J

A good place to start would be to count the splines in the hub. Its been a long time, but I believe the bigger Mercs were using 33 spline hubs... itll definitely be off a larger motor as anything under 175-200hp usually wouldn't do so well with a 4-blade. Hope this helps

Re: Found some treasure

Take it to a boat dealer. They will tell you what it is and what it is worth.

Re: Found some treasure

Many offshore boats use 4 blade props for their holding power in seas and where engine configurations dictate.

Re: Found some treasure

I put a 4 blade on a Bayliner 26' with a 175hp turned the boat no hole shot, it would cavatate and falling off plane in a turn to handling like a ski boat, I rolled some one out of there chair turning to hard when I first put it on.

Re: Found some treasure

Whatever the market will bear. Is my typical answer when I am asked at the shop.
Supply and demand is the issue. A 26 pitch propeller is rarely used, it would be an application of more horsepower and low gross weight, like a 18 ft baha with a 250hp
We must determine what drive it fits, best to bring by a dealer and get the application, next attempt to sell on eBay or Craig's list.
I don't buy any props at my place, they seem to multiply like rabbits around the shop, and it takes years to find a suitable home for them.
Short answer: if you can find a guy that needs it it's worth 1/2 of a new one retail. If not it's a crab trap weight. Take into account that most prop pitches are 15 - 21, with the most common being 19p.
