TSA Rules for Traveling with a Speargun

Hi folks,

I happened to be on the US Transportation Security Administration site reading up their "Traveling with Special Items" editorial and got a big kick at the fact that they now specifically mention their requirements for traveling with a speargun under the article's fishing equipment section.

I am posting the link below in case any of you encounter any problems checking in your spearguns. It would be handy to have this page either bookmarked on your smart phones or printed so you can show the misinformed airline rep next time you are checking in your guns.

TSA: Traveling with Special Items

..."Spear Guns"

Spear guns are prohibited from carry-on luggage. These items should be packed in checked luggage. Any sharp objects packed in checked luggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and security screeners."...

Cheers,
Claudio

Claudio, my trusty Sportube and spearguns are flying with me to Guam this Saturday. I have never had a problem with it. Do not buy the smaller ones, buy this one.

This is perfect! I think carrying a copy with you when you travel might prevent some confusion at the airport. Thanks for posting!

Thanks Jim! I'll look to get the "series 3" Sportube for my spearing trip to Rio in March. Have fun in Guam!

I have a large tube that my gun fits in, no problems so far checking it in. It says FISHING EQUIPMENT in bold letters on the outside of the tube. Dont tell the clerk its a spear"gun" or you may have some issues with those that have no clue what it is.

I think it is great that they have spearguns as fishing gear. Now you can really say your equipment is "fishing gear" with a straight face

I'd keep a copy of that reg in my gun bag/tube...just in case they open it...see your gun...and forget their own regs...Tape that paper to your gun, or rubberband that bad boy on, so that it is obvious and they at least look it over.

I can also vouch for Southwest Airlines, they do not charge extra for an over length tube. They have special policies for sporting equipment and allow checked fishing gear to be 91 inches in length although their policy states the tube to be 3 inches in diameter mine is 6 or 8 inches and they have never said anything or charged extra as long as it falls into the 2 checked bag category.

Can I put my speargun and equiptment in my golf hardcase? I know it'll fit, but I've heard about them cutting or taking the bands, is that true?

Haven't heard of that happening but if it's a concern just remove the bands and put them in your baggage. It sure would stink to get to your destination and have cut bands.

exactly what I was thinking, i could always re-tie them. Or put on my old ones to see if they cut them or not.

Re: TSA Rules for Traveling with a Speargun

Once I tried sending my spearguns as "fishing equipment". A zealous checker x rayed the bag, and sent out a call for me to report to the oversize baggage office. She was really suspicious. If I hadn't have allayed her concerns, the package would have sat at the airport, prolly till I got back from the trip.

Nowadays I put both lables - "Under water fishing equipment" and "speargun". I declare them at customs/quarantine. I have to stop and talk to the inspector, and usually they are more interested in spearfishing than in legalities, but I don't take the chance of not having them arrive with me.

Sometimes its actually faster to go through the "items to declare" land anyway.
