4 hours free+ 1' vis+ 32" gun = 27"hali + 6" smile
I got out for a few hours today with a dive bud of mine. Surf was up, the coast was murky and shitty for miles up and down, and the wind was whipping the sand along the beach. We posted up next to the wreckage of a drug panga, at Leviathans a favorite spot of mine because you never know what you'll find there. Vis on the outside of the kelp was 8' of milk, and inside it was 1-2' and super surgy.
After about an hour and 1/4 with out seeing a fish over 6" and only small crabs we decided to head in. I decided to bounce dive and cover the whole way in on the bottom trying to scare up a grassy rockfish or crab. I was inside behind the impact zone when I saw a curve in the gravel 10" from my face that made me think "that kind of looks like the arch in the lateral line on a halibut". I backed off 6" and was barely able to make out the eyes in the murk. My tiny midhandle was in my hand, elbow back and the muzzle near my face; I let it fly and the 3 bands flung the shaft about 8" and pinned the flattie to the reef. His mouth popped open and I got my hand int the gills, freed the shaft and hauled her in. She went 28 with the jaw open so im calling it 27". This was a heavy fish for the size and gave up some thick fillets as well a pouch of roe. I dont get too many gamefish so Im stoked. Finding the fish in the mud was a Mr Magoo braille and perseverance piece of luck, but Im pretty pleased with my dive today. Jeremy |

Great story with a happy ending for you-- not so sure about the happy ending for the halibut.
That is one short mid handle gun - exactly what is needed for zero visability Ya did well, SDM |

Isn't it crazy how the best catches are when your cold, done, and heading in? Reminds me of a cabezon I nailed heading in after sunset, you never know!
Awesome fish Ill bet it tasted great after a long dive. |

Thanks, hey when I was getting ready to fillet (a rare task for me, I hardly ever catch a fish I cant cook whole) I was mumbling to myself about being incompetent and my wife puts up in my face a video from youtube on how to fillet a halibut by....Scubafever. nice video, thanks for it.
