Re: 62" Hybrid build

Some progress. Have reworked a little the sides, shaped the CF/Teak junction a little and started removing a few millimeters on the top so that the closed track is flush with the wood surface and shark tabs protrude enough.
Shaped a butt pad out of a flip-flop and the glue is now drying.
Also drilled a lanyard hole (god, I'd love to have a drill press...)
and countersunk all the holes on the gun.

Hoping to have some time this week to make some progress.. Have been waiting for the roller muzzle for 6 weeks now, due today in theory. If anyone is reading this do you recommend putting some lead in the muzzle? Since it is a roller muzzle flip should be minimal anyway no?
thanks guys!

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Ended up profiling the muzzle this way. It's a little boxy but I want to leave as much wood as possible to hold the CF tube.
The idea of the hooked shape is that it will allow me to rig the speargun in 2 differents ways.
Either the bands will link to the pin I inserted at the front for a one stage loading process, or (if rigged differently with stronger bands) I can hook the band behind the muzzle for a 2 stage loading process

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Added lead in the handle. I flattened a bunch of air rifle pellets :-)
Epoxyed them in place but the tape wasn't making it exactly leak proof so I had some issues. It's fun to see the pellets at the bottom of the handle!

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Then finally started the epoxy coats. I have seen really nice camo finishes and I wanted to try something a little bit like that, but trying to stay close to the classic "woodland" pattern. I also love the wood grain so decided to leave a clear top on the top of the gun.
Started off with 2 blue coats (using pigments) and a few days later had time tonight to try one side of the speargun with grey/white/black.

Re: 62" Hybrid build

how far is that butt from the handle? it looks so far - the butt will be right in your face when you hold it out in front of you.

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Hi Triponempa,
I haven't measured but yes it's far. Still manageable -I hope- but if I were to build another one I would put the handle closer to the butt. The fact it is a roller should reduce recoil.

When I positioned it I was focused on balancing on not enough on arm length :-)
We'll see how it turns out....

Re: 62" Hybrid build

Hello everyone,

So here is pretty much the final product!

Since then I have added 14mm rubbers. These are 24" long and when fully extended should be 76". I am struggling big time to load the speargun!!! Knowing I'm really slender and not build like a tank I'm hoping the friend I'm building this for will be able to load it, it should be barely 200% elongation or 300% depending on the convention you use.

I am also planning on doing a set of 16mm rubber bands but will do a 2 stage loading process. If anyone has tips on how to create a stopper to do this I'd love to hear from you. So far I'm planning to use to bands in a U shape configuration and joined together at the bottom of the "U" by a number of spectra loops.

The second picture gives a sense of scale next to my hole gun (see my Ikea speargun thread)

Main design learnings for me is handle placement and height -it's good to have it high, but I stretched the limit too much for my comfort and felt I had to reinforce the sides which cost me a lot time-
Also, epoxy coating was terribly difficult for result. Next time if I epoxy I'll keep it really simple, one color, or clear coat. Or maybe just oil finish.

Lot of fun though and I really hope this gun kills big fish, I'd be proud!
