Most used speargun length

I want to know what is the lenght of the speargun you mostly use for spearfishing?

It can be midd-handle, euro or rail gun. Just choose lenght you mostly use.

If you spearfishing mostly with roller, regardless of the length, choose "roller" and if mostly use pneumatic guns choose "pneumatic".

Re: Most used speargun lenght

You seem like a smart person, and i do enjoy your posts...however, This question is practically useless, almost (if not more) as useless as the x gun VS. y gun polls... Considering everyone uses different lengths depending on the conditions visibility the location and whatever works for their preference. Hell some people don't even own a gun and just use friends. I have multiple weapons that I use. Ranging from 24in, 36, 45, 58 to a 132 inch pole spear and I live in the keys....

so how am I or anyone else for that matter supposed to actually answer this??

I'm glad that you answered so directly.
Opposite from your answer I found this poll very interesting. This is international forum so it will be interesting for me to see what lenght of the gun is most used from forum population. Also, it will show how much population uses rollers or pneumatic guns.
I understand that spearfishing environment and type determines the lenght of a gun but different spearos choose different guns for the same conditions also. Do you agree?
I'm using various lenghts of guns also but most of the time I'm using 90cm with 2x16 bands.
We will be able to see what is the most used lenght and even type of the speargun from forum members.

What is the most used lenght of the gun from forum members? Most used not owned.

Edit: Lots of people use the same gun with different setups also.

Cheers.

I'm sure band strech is few mm up or down.

Choose 110 or 120.

I have a feeling that you'll see a classic bell shaped curve on analysis with a peak somewhere around 120.

Lets see.
I believe if this poll was for Europe peak will be somewhere around 100. But here will vote lots of people from different parts of the world.
We will see what the result will be.

Cheers.

Re: Most used speargun lenght

My pneumatic gun is called a mares sten 133cm but is only 47 inches long. Do i use the actual length or what they advertize it at. What about my 32 or my 58. Should i factor in band strech or full length.

Usually when measuring pneumatic guns you are mesuring from top of the gun, from "mouth" of the pipe" to the place where your handle starts. That is the actual size. For band powered spearguns you are mesuring from the part of the hole on the head which is closest to you, to the last pin/notch on your shaft (pin which is closest to the body).
For guns with closed head from point where band starts to last pin/notch.
Overall size is something else.

I think that you already know this but somebody maybe don't.

P.S.
I have to mention this Sten. Very powerfull gun. I had Cyrano but not so long. I had problem with loading such thin shaft without easy loader. It was easy to bend it.

Re: Most used speargun lenght

Im not exactly sure what they were refering to the 133, i think the spear is almost 120 cm but not sure, i was pretty close to 133 but not exact. No one here i know uses a pneumaic these days. Its about my favorite gun. I have shot hog fish to a 40-50 lb mackeral. No slip tip for is so i try to make the deep shots count. Its deadly accurate. An overpowered. I shoot a 5/16 beuchat stainless spear with a dry barrel kit from tromic. It took about 1400 pumps till i started having trouble. Im 6'3 and Ill grab the spear by the flopper (with gloves) and stuff it in the gun. I use a knee loader but am trying load it without to keep it more streamlined...

Sorry i dont have a better photo right now

I see that you have nice arsenal. You made anatomical handle also.
It is the same situation here. Very few people uses pneumatic guns these days.
I peronaly left it because it was very loud for my type of hunting, thin shaft which I have disort few times (when it was pumped to have enough power) and more expensive servicing. Now my first option is wood in carbon. Neutrally balanced, very quiet, more powefull with less recoil (and I can always work something on it ).
I'm 190cm tall and sometimes I had problem to load my ex Mares Cyrano 970 (39 inch). So thin shaft likes to "dance" when you need to load fast.

Because very few people use it you like it more. I know that.

From pneumatic guns I use only Seac Sub Asso 50 now. Small gun for holes.

Lots of manifactures don't put exact lenght on product. It can vary for all types of guns. When I build wooden gun, for example band strech 89cm, I say it is 90cm gun. If somebody put spear on the same gun which have pins moved more to front, bands can strech for example 87cm.

I know tromic and Tomba system. He is my compatriot. His product is very good and quality. Using Tomba you are getting much more power. I think that you already felt it on your gun.

Edit:
I think Cyrano Evo HF is a good pneumatic gun now. I didn't try it yet but from specs and look it must be very good gun.

Re: Most used speargun lenght

Horses for courses

Seems to me you need to match your gear to the most rigorous fish you are likely to catch, not the average one. Shorten length to match low viz conditions.

When I fish in Port Phillip Bay (southern Australia) I chase pinkie snapper, and use a 1 metre euro gun. 6.5mm spear. This is light enough to track the smallish fish that duck and weave. If I go to the top end if the Bay, the viz is usually much lower (often 2 - 4) so I take my 80cm gun.

When I dive in the ocean here in Victoria, I usually take my 1.1m rail gun. 7mm spear, 19mm rubbers. The water is clearer and the extra range is appreciated.

If I am diving in open water, hoping for kingfish, I will take my 1.3 classic woodie (two rubbers and 8mm spear)

I also have Americano cannons (inertia guns) sitting in the garage waiting for a crack at tuna. They are 1.4m with four rubbers and 8mm spears.

When I used to live in the Northern Territory (tropical Australia) the fish were robust but the viz was often poor (1 -3metres). I used to make a 1metre midhandle with two rubbers, an 8mm spear fronted by a pranger (cluster head).

I agree with this one.

If we will go in details it is very hard to define. I wrote about it in one of my previous posts.
But where do you hunt the most and with which gun?

Re: Most used speargun lenght

Where do I hunt the most?
Tomorrow I plan a sunrise dive in Port Phillip - euro. The day after, I plan an ocean dive - rail gun.
After that, who knows?
