What's the best way to get a gun returned to you?
I've finally balled up the cash it's going to cost me to have Mori make me a nice 62" bluewater gun and he's on it. I plan on this gun lasting me until I die, unlessin I lose it.
My plan is to stamp my driver's license # and name on the gun. If Jim Gillen doesn't ring a bell with any finder's, then at least the CDL# should help them find me regardless of any address or phone # changes that occur in the future. Only an idiot loses a speargun. I know. What were those 1st Australian mass produced wooden guns? Sea Hornets or something? Can't think of the name of them on the spot. I had the longest one they made, 54" I think? 18 years ago or so I shot a seabass N of the dominator wreck. He tangled up solidly in the kelp and I elected to disco my shooting line to get him out. I had 100' of that blue tuna line stripped off my reel running all over the place, it was calm and I decide to swim the fish and shaft back to the kayak and stuff him in and return for the gun. Calm day, kayak wasn't far. . what could go wrong? How could you not find something that floats with 100" of line hangin of it? So yeah, I never saw that gun again after looking all over the place for hours. I will never in my mind fully comprehend how it could have disapeared. I had a friend looking for it as well. Hope who ever found it put it to many years of good use But if you know any smarter methods besides putting a CDL# on a gun, holler here. |

I write my email address on the guns. Someone who finds it will contact you, or scrub it off...it's up to them.
With dive lights, I put a buisness card inside, since sooner or later you've gotta change batteries. On my working gear it's the last 4 of the SSN...so they know where to return the body

"phone number $$$ 4 return" is what goes on my gun and gear with a paint pen. That and a float line also with my #$$$4 return on it with sharpie .

Re: What's the best way to get a gun returned to you?
Your average Joe doesn't have the ability to look someone up by drivers license number. They'd have to go to the police to do that, which is asking a lot of many people who may have any number of reasons for not wanting to deal with cops. But putting name and a email address that you know isn't going away anytime soon is a great bet. And if it goes missing run, don't walk, to put a bunch of posts on boards like this with the gun brand and the full name you put on it so that people can google you easily. I recently returned an old dive log from the 1980s to a guy when I found it in a dive bag I'd bought at a yard sale. I just googled his name and the address listed. He hadn't lived there for years but it led me to his business website and he was stoked to get those memories back.

Go to almost any pet store.
Put money in the engraving machine. Make a tag. Screw it to the gun.

I have nice brass tags made for mine from the trophy shop. They will eventually rust off but have lasted years of use with no rusting. Brass gets that nice nautical patina and looks good against the wood.

Kelsey put her name and info on the gun that went down with the ship, and when the CG salvage crew picked up debris, they found her gun and called her up about it.

Dremel and fine grinding tip
Put your name on the stock/ barrel and under the handle That way if someone tried to lie to you or you come across it later after it was sold, you can reclaim it

Re: What's the best way to get a gun returned to you?
Sometimes you just get lucky. I lost a shaft off of bird rock a couple of years ago and wrote it off to stupidity. Lucky for me Capn' George found it and returned it. Wouldn't take anything.
As to your question. name, phone number and hope the finder has character. I need to write my name & phone # on all of my gear as I am particularly stupid and forgetful. Maybe tomorrow if I don't forget by then. Louis Rosales |

If you have an email address which you keep use that most people will send you an email. Put a phone number on it if it is a number you will keep like a cell phone. Nice to have your name there as well unless that is your email address.

Re: What's the best way to get a gun returned to you?
Some pretty good ideas there! I like the petshop one. That way if info changes, you can just do it again.
Pretty sure Mori would never make a 2nd gun for me if I paint the 1st one pink, but I have used that method to keep tools in my toolbox before |
