What newsletters/mags are popular in California?
I'd like to get the word out in California about spearboard, but being from Florida, don't know what publications would be good to put an ad in. I'm going to put one in Spearfishing Magazine, but are there other regional publications that any of you guys could recommend? Thanks.

Getting News Out
there are a couple of things you could do that may help draw more members
1.Publications a. spearfishing magazine b. hawaii skindiver (we are pretty close to hawaii) c. western outdoor news (very good paper for fishing, gets alot of circulation in california) 2. Websites a. www.deeperblue.net is very similar to this site, but has guys from all over the world. a bunch of guys from california on there... post that this site is open b. www.ladiver.com is a site that has tons of info and links to clubs and organizations (contact them) c. http://www.sport-fish-info.com/dcfor...in/dcboard.cgi this board gets a ton of hits, not all spearos, but try the kayakers and private boaters section, you should pickup som guys from there 3. Word of Mouth a. contact julie riffe at www.speargun.com and ask her to join the board to share stories, answer questions about guns, etc. She is very cool and i think its worth a try b. i am just getting into spearfishing very seriously and will be attending meetings (long beach Neptunes, Fathomiers, etc) where many spearos go and i could try to circulate word there 4. Business a. many of the dive shops, and dive charters (which can be found on the link ladiver.com) here in southern cal. do alot to promote the sport. possibly contact them and ask them to post news in their store about the website like Beach Cities Scuba or Liburdi's, etc Thats all that i can think of for now. i have been talking with a couple of the guys that i dive with that do alot of diving and get a lot of fish... hopefully they will start checking out the board and posting. i like the board alot and will do what i can to promote it. sask (will laribee) |

Best wishes.
Scott, I applaud you're efforts to increase spearfishing awareness in CA. I recently returned to the state and am dismayed by the anti-spearfishing/hunting sentiment of some of the Orange County dive community. I'm glad Zach Schwartz et al. are getting a diving/spearfishing club started in Orange County. Sask mentioned 2 great dive shops in this area: Liburdi's Scuba Center and Beach Cities Scuba. Liburdi's is in Costa Mesa and Beach Cities has 2 locations (Huntington Beach & Dana Point). From what I hear, the Dana Point store is especially geared to servicing freedivers and spearfishers. Best wishes!

hey prodigal
i shop at both liburdi's and beach cities in Dana Point. The guy that owns Beach cities, Hossam, is one of the nicest guys i have met. he is good friends with the Riffe family and is always at their factory when he's not at his shop. If you stop in there, tell hossam Will Laribee says hello.
Are you spearfishing now that your back in California?? sask (will Laribee) |

Reply to Sask
I really want to spearfish again, but I've got very limited time because of my job and family. Plus, most of my old diving buddies have long left the area. I met Zach at Liburdi's, but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to join his club (OC Hunter). I spoke with someone from the Fathomiers, and I hope to attend one of their meetings in Torrance. I wish there was something limited to the Irvine/Newport Beach/Laguna Beach are. Thanks for the info re: Beach Cities in Dana Point. I definitely want to visit that place.
