25 HP Mercury Outboard

The motor is a 1989 and has run great with very few problems (relative for a boat) since I got it 6 years ago. I went out fishing and as I pulled up to the spot it cut out. I didn't think anything of it because it was idling and hadn't really gotten time to warm up. When we went to run back up for another drift, it wouldn't start.

Other Info:
I ran it about a month ago with no problems.
The gas was new for the trip a month ago so that shouldn't be an issue.
I checked the separation filter and theres no sign of water in the fuel.
Spark plugs are good.
I gave it a quick shot of ether today to see what happened and it cranked up first pull and ran for about 5 seconds (I know some of y'all hate ether but I needed a starting point to figure it out)

I am assuming that it is a carburetor issue and I plan to clean it and put in new gaskets, but Im wondering if there are other things to check before I go through that or if that doesn't fix it.

fuel lines! Check every one and the clamp around them, if the line is not seated all the way you could be loosing pressure. Check the ball and connections to your tank all the way to the engine. Could be a very simple fix and deff check the gaskets in your carb. good luck

Are you using ethanol free fuel? The stuff makes a crust and eats rubber parts. My boats fuel lines started leaking and the ball bearing on the fitting to the fuel tank stuck.Replaced line and fitting and used a bottle of ethanol treatment with ethanol free gas and was GTG.Ethanol gas with 2 stroke is problematic also.

You might also check for pinholes in the diaphragm in the fuel pump if so equipped.

Re: 25 HP Mercury Outboard

Thanks guys for all the tips. It ended up being a carb issue. I pulled it and cleaned it the. It ran great for two trips. Now its in the shop with issues beyond my expertise but hey, its a boat.
