trachea Squeeze
My son got a trachea squeeze a while ago at a relatively shallow depth. Has anyone else experienced this? Did they seek medical care? etc?

How old is he? How long ago was it and does he still have symptoms?

Re: trachea Squeeze
Normally a squeeze should heal in a couple of weeks -> a month. If he is still having problems / still feel it after a couple of months I would seek a proper medical evaluation to sort out any potential hazards.

Re: trachea Squeeze
What depth?
How do you know it was a trachea squeeze? - What were the symptoms? Has he had a squeeze before? This is a well documented freediving injury. An advanced course such as F.I.I. Level 2 will teach you what exactly happens, how to prevent it, and what to do it about afterwards. Definitely shouldn't still be freediving immediately after. Since the only way to know the severity of the injury is by doing a specific test 5-10min after the dive occurred - he should wait at least a month to be on the safe side. Note* I'm not a Doctor. |

Re: trachea Squeeze
It was a few months ago. He had pain, discomfort, bleeding and was only in 50 feet.

Re: trachea Squeeze
50ft is very rare, but still possible. His anatomy could be more prone to a trachea squeeze. Was there an obvious sudden movement?

Re: trachea Squeeze
No movement that he recognized and he had been to around 85 or so a lot before this. Seems very weird to me.

Re: trachea Squeeze
If he still has discomfort after a few months , he should be checked by a MD with experience in freediving....

Re: trachea Squeeze
I had 2 severe asthma attacks recently on my ascent from 80-89' depth. Immersion Pulmonary Edema. Never grew up with asthma, diving induced only. Thought that was very weird too! Told by pulmonary specialist to never dive again. Called DAN, who referred me to Dr. Michael Chidester, WPB Internal Medical doc/ Hyperbaric . You may want to send your son to be checked out, awesome doc, and said I Can dive again!
God Speed to your son

Re: trachea Squeeze
It has happened to me a few times as well. Also in shallow depths (10-20 meters). Went to the doctor but they were clueless. Discussed this with my freediving instructors and I was told to take rest while the tissue healed. I think it could be a product of bad equalization. I needed to perfect the frenzel method. Still happens sometimes.
