Re: gun for a 12 year old
75cm gun is ideal. I have several Hammerhead guns, and for the learning style of diving, it is a good starter gun. Not big, not unruly in the water, and easy to use.

Re: gun for a 12 year old
I would go with a less expensive gun the chances of it getting lost are prety good. Biller makes some fairly easy to use guns that are inexpensive and work well.

x2 hammerhead, IMO the red bands are easy to deal with.

Re: gun for a 12 year old
My son began about 5 using a highly modified US Diver "Atom" gun -- never lost it.. Now a treasured gun from the past.
Would suggest a small gun, one shooting line loop...and a bright color. You and he will have the time of your life and times he will never forget! sdm |

Re: gun for a 12 year old
He's 15, so I doubt its his son. However, even if its his brother, they may have the time of their lives. I'm just concerned about a 15-year-old who is a self-described noobie mentoring a 12-year-old.

Re: gun for a 12 year old
Yeah, in response to Bill's post, be super careful. The potential for injury is really high when two inexperienced guys are out together......never mind that, the potential for injury is high even when experienced guys are together. I almost drowned in 12' of water, on a calm day, when I was 23, with a dive partner (age 22), all because I got tangled up in a line underwater. I was able to cut myself out, but you've gotta be super careful.
In response to the gun question, I'd suggest a 75cm euro or rail gun. Much easier to aim and maneuver than some of the bigger guns. Hammerhead's not a bad beginner's gun, but their quality is spotty. Mako/RA are both great guns too. I'd avoid screw in bands as the replacement bands will start costing you big bucks over time. My advice would be to see what's for sale in the members section (buying used is a great way to get a higher quality gun than you were expecting for a lower price than you planned on paying). Also, try to link up with an experienced guy (via this site or in person) who can show you some of the ropes. Safety is really important, but you can also learn a whole lot about locations, technique, equipment, etc... from a guy who knows his stuff and your area well. Don't take these suggestions as we all think you're not capable of diving correctly (I'm sure you are) but people of any age can get injured. And having a dive buddy with you isn't just so you can protect/teach him, it's so that he can also protect/teach you back. Just ask yourself, if you got tangled up underwater, would you trust your 12 y/o dive buddy to cut you out or help pull you free? Good luck on the gun search and dive safe. Alex

Re: gun for a 12 year old
Or you could try and find a used Riffe O or OO. Great banger, quiet because you don't have the metal on metal clangng that you get with most metal tube guns. Not as popular as they once were, so there might be a few used ones out there that people would be willing to part with. If you limit the shooting line length so that it is perfect for shooting about 4 feet for hole hunting, then you have less to worry about in regards to being accidentally shot. Less line = less range. Might up your percentages for coming through this critical learning stage without gettin shafted.

Re: gun for a 12 year old
Pelon,
His 12 year old brother has to pay for the gun on his own. I don't really think he'll be able to afford a $400 gun. Even if he can, I also don't think his parents will let him spend that much for a gun. I think the price needs to stay more affordable. But you are right, the Riffe C-0 or C-00 are great guns.
