Stillwater Dive Report 5-8-10

Yesterday (5-08-10), U/C Spearo, Smash and his 12yr old son Tim, and myself drove over from Fresno and dove Stillwater Cove off of the kayaks. We were joined by Dave Peretz. The water was as flat as I have ever seen and the vis was incredible. You only get that kind of vis less than a dozen times a year in this location (30’ to 40’). We all shot plenty of fish. Smash and son Tim shot a stringer of 7-8 fish (kelpies and blues), U/C Spearo got a nice stringer of kelpies and I think a couple of olives. David had a descent stringer also. And I shot 7 fish, mostly kelpies and blues, with a perch and a female greenling. We saw several lings, but none were legal or even close. A couple of the guys saw some leopard sharks. Lots of seals around, but none really bothered us. The kelp has started to grow in thick. Lots of it. Hopefully, the others will chime in. We forgot the cameras so no pictures were taken while we were there, but I took one of my catch when I got home.

Beautiful stringer Bryan, I dig the variety and color. I dove just north of you guys yesterday and enjoyed the awesome conditions as well.

If you think those are weird looking, you should take a look at the lings and cabezon. Ugly suckers, but they taste good.

Nelson,

How did you guys do? I heard the vis was not as good where you and Alex went. But that is all I heard.

Re: Stillwater Dive Report 5-8-10

I dove Big Sur yesterday, insane conditions, maybe 50' vis? Was able to see the black noodle float at the end of my 56' foot floatline... water was COLD! forgot my computer, so I'm not sure exactly how cold, but it felt like 50 or less. great dive regardless... shot a few nice rockfish but didn't come across any lings or cabs.

Nice Greenie Bryan!
A buddy moved to Monterey, 2 blocks from the Aquarium, so this summer I'll be buzzing you to set up some dives. I can relay his number if you need a place to crash.

It's an Omer Cayman HF speargun. The reel can with the gun. Also comes with the line. I would assume the reel is made by Omer also.

That would be great. I would love to be able to return the favor and kindness you once showed to me. And by all means, send e your friends #. I'll also get him hooked up with the Triton's. Send him my # also. PM sent.

Re: Stillwater Dive Report 5-8-10

Hey Bryan, nice catch. Yeah Bob told me you guys had some great viz over there. Over @ the Pinos to Lover's strip everything looked great from the shore but wasn't so great once we dipped our heads in. 20-25 feet in the shallows, 8-12 foot pea soup toward the mid reef (20-40ft depth). John was a few sites down and reported the same.

On the bright side I got my monkeyface eel. Detailed report posted in my thread.

Looking forward to more black bear diner food!

Nice stringer of fish Bryan. We finished up Mark Lozano's freedive class yesterday in Carmel out in 120' of water and the vis was 40+, but I agree it was cold.

Post up a report, I wanna hear how you guys did.
Sounds like you guys had some great conditions for your last open water dive.

Nice conditions in the cove!
Vis out by the pinnacles was about 70 feet.
