Mori Slip-tip Spectra Replacement

I did a quick search, and could not find what I was looking for, so please don't beat me up right away. I have a couple Mori spectra slip-tips, and some spare spectra for when the time comes to replace it. Looking for some help...

It appears that what Mori does is pass the spectra up and through the slot in the tip, then inserts it back into itself, into the the hollow center of the spectra, and it runs almost all the way back down near the slide ring where it just stops. I can tell where it stops by the diameter change, but otherwise it appears there is no anchor holding it, only the resistance of the spectra re-weaved within itself for that distance? Is this why guys switch to cable when going for monster fish, will the spectras pull through itself with enough force? Somehow he manages to get the spectra nice and tight against the tip.

Are there any threads, or can someone post pics, on how to perform this spectra insertion through the tip? Looks like micro-surgery to me.
Thank you!

No, it won't slip. Works like a Chinese finger trap.
You can get the splicing fid from Josh along w/Spectra for about $10:

and here's how you do it:

Re: Mori Slip-tip Spectra Replacement

I've lost fish - and expensive Mori tips - when the Spectra has been cut on bone etc inside fish. Perhaps that's why many of us replace the Spectra with cable... I love the tips tho, but that Spectra can get sliced with spine shots, and also bitten off if you dive around pesky sharks.

Damn I just did this 2 days ago and thought about taking pictures just in case someone needed it. He ties a knot about 4 inches from the end.

Re: Mori Slip-tip Spectra Replacement

I did a spectra rerig on a Riffe mini ice pick not too long ago. The Mori-style slide ring's aperture for the spectra seems to be slightly narrower than standard. So what I wound up doing to make it work was to put the spectra through the slide ring, bring the slide ring within a few inches or less of the halfway mark, then double it back on itself using the wire tool to pull it through itself and the slide ring at the same time.

Maybe that's how everybody does it anyways, but I found that adding the slide ring at the end was otherwise impossible.

Re: Mori Slip-tip Spectra Replacement

I just switched a cable Mori over to spectra. Maybe I should just put the cable back on?

It all depends on what your shooting. I dive in Hawaii so have very little experience with YT or WSB BUT from what I understand they dont have the stiff bones like tuna, ono, or other pelagics. Spectra works fine on these fish plus is better for making more frequent shots as the spectra wont kink, stays on the shaft better.

Cable is a must for shooting tuna, big ono, marlin, ulua, and so on. The down side to cable is that if you do kink it, that little kink can act as a sort of spring making it hard to keep the tip on the shaft.

For everyday use I think Spectra is the way to go. If you plan on hitting up bigger pelagics than maybe its time to switch to cable.

I have yet to poke any BIG fish...but I was sold on the Spectra when I saw several guys using cable slip-tips rip off their fish, (YT and dodos, diving from Leo's boat). Granted...these losses were most likely the result of too much pressure on the float line combined with a lousy shot placement, but the spectra seems way less likely to tear the soft flesh.
