Re: The new JBL slip tips (photo)

anyone have any luck buying one of these? I tried Florida Freedivers, Freediveshop, BBProDive, even tried Sport Chalet(they asked me if I need the pull spear barber point), and James&Joseph(very, very helpful by the way)... I just emailed JBL but havent heard back yet, but any direction to retailers would be appreciated.

It needs one since it doesn't have a little barb on the rear end to help push it off the adapter and turn it sideways inside the fish. Its just another way of accomplishing the same thing. Its modeled after the Kitto tip that I've had for over 10 years, and that always seemed to work well. (Kitto photo below)

In some cases, it might even have an advantage over the tips with a barb on the rear end. Now and then when one of those doesn't go out through the far side of the fish, it will fail to deploy from the adapter and slide back out with the shaft. It doesn't happen often, but its happened to me. The flopper would be almost certain to catch meat and open up as the shaft came back out, ensuring that the tip came off the adapter.

Re: The new JBL slip tips (photo)

great explanation! I have the one with the barb and it seems to work. i just like less moving parts. I guess I been fortunate were all my shots just completely penetrated the fish with no chance of the tip slipping back out.

always something new to learn.

Does tri-cut really make that much difference?

It is a pain in the ass to resharpen in my mind.

Re: The new JBL slip tips (photo)

Why the flopper? One of the nice things about a slip tip is that it is streamlined and you don't have anything dangling. For long shots in open water a flopper can really hurt accuracy while a streamlined slip tip is like shooting a flopperless shaft. It really looks nice but I wonder if it is possible to get it without a flopper?

Hi wl,
Of course Florida Freedivers already has the Warheads!
Silly question :>)
Now when I will get around to posting them on my website is the real question :>(

I have them in the two common threads (ie 6mm & 5/16") and in 9/32" and 5/16" shaft diameters.
They are listed at $79.20

Regards,
Mike.

That depends on the fish you shoot and where in the fish you shoot them.

Tri-cuts work best on large heavy scaled fish in open water, or any fish over about 30 pounds you shoot through the skull. They sharpen easily with a good bastard file or diamond stone between dives, unless of course you shoot the oil rig. Nothing survives a full on steel on steel impact.

I think they do for two reasons.
1. Older divers have found that non-tri cuts can potentialy ricocet off a seabass at odd angles, thats why bob is always singing their praises.
2. Potentially if you skim the backbone with a pencil point no real damage is done it could kind of just push the the bone out of its way, not severing the spine. If a tri-cut skims a bone the cutting edges will cut the bone and do some damage. I have seen the pencil point "push" the backbone out of the way on a friends 45lb fish. It fought like hell. I bet if he had a tri-cut it would have messed up that fish pretty good.
