Unofficial Tr-Club Meet Results

The meet was held at Dana Harbor today, so Nancy and I went to the weigh-in to meet people and see how much damage was done to my secret spots. These weights are from memory, rounded to nearest full pound, and are strictly unofficial, so don't hold me to them. I'm sure the official results will be posted later.

The winner was Monterey Triton Travis Jones with a 52 pound white sea bass and a couple of other fish.

Second was Neptune Larry Heinrich with a 48 pound white plus two smaller fish.

And I think third was another Triton (who invited those guys?) with a goat over 20 pounds. I'm afraid I didn't catch his name. Sorry.

One photo shows Paul Romanowski with a barely barely barely legal white sea bass, the only other white taken, but I took it with his back to the camera in case he wanted to deny it later.

Re: Unofficial Tr-Club Meet Results

I had my chance to join these two surface shooters today. I was breathing up on the surface after spooking an unseen white in really bad vis on the bottom in 40'. I never saw a fish but heard the big BOOM they make when they take off. So anyway, two dives later I was breathing up on the surface thinking about how I missed my opportunity and spooked the fish., when a VERY large white swam under me about 10-15' down and angling away. I had her lined up sighting down the gun but was aiming at the tail/back. I did not think the fish saw me so I tried to drop down and get a level shot. Just as I leveled off about 10' down and just getting ready to pull the trigger she boomed out. Not really sure why I did not take the shot when I had it I think I came in fourth? with a sheephead, bass and sargo. It was overall a great day on the water in spite of having 20+ boats on the bed we were diving!

Re: Unofficial Tr-Club Meet Results

Oh don't get me wrong I did not abstain because of not wanting to shoot a fish from the surface, in fact i am kicking myself for not taking the shot when I had the chance. I just dove down thinking that i had it, but I didn't I threw In the "surface shooters" bit because I thought it would be funny, guess some people take it seriously. The guy that won told me he has made 4 trips down to SoCal lately to try for WSB and has taken a fish each time! By comparison I have dove my ass off down here this spring and have shot one fish. This was my first time in any type of dive meet so I was just stoked to be in the company of so many great divers.

Congrats to the winners, especially Travis!!

Wish I could have made it but unfortunately am in the beginning of one of my big work grinds.

Tlhe Tritons are stepping up to the plate. Driving down to show all the local clubs how it's done. Good on you guys!

not that it matters but Travis lives in Madera. nice fish especially for diving in a crowded bed

Bill,

Travis is actually from Madera, which is right next to Fresno. A 6 hour drive one way. But it was worth it. Had a great time..........and very little sleep. A big thanks to Paul and the Fathomiers and the Neptunes for inviting us (The Monterey Bay Tritons) to share in the festivities. Can't wait to have you guys up for one our events in the future. We look forward to returning the hospitality.

Haaaaaa....get used to it!

That's Kavi with the big goat. 18 year old diver from the Carmel/Big Sur area and the third place winner. Congrats Kavi!

I had a great time diving the Dana Point area and meeting so many people I have SBed with, but had never met in person. (Finally met Billy Mac!) I had never been there before and had little idea what to expect, but conditions were excellent for wsb. I was in the water for maybe...5 minutes when this fish came out of the kelp and parked less than 10 feet below me. Just amazing to see a nice big fish like that for me, let alone to be able to shoot and fight it to submission. I'd love to be able to say it wasn't a surface shot, but I knew there was little chance of me making any kind of pike without almost touching the fish and blowing my chance. It was the only wsb I saw for the rest of the day. I still can't believe I pulled off the win. I thought for sure that Larry's fish looked bigger than mine when he pulled it out of his cooler, but the scale doesn't lie.

Thanks to Paul Romanowski and all the other people who worked hard to put this event on to raise money to fight the MLPAs. The trophy artwork was done by Paul's son and turned out awesome!

Bob, thanks for letting us use your boat....again.

See you all at the Neptune's Blue Water Meet....

Congrats Travis and all our club members for making it down. Special thanks to the Neptunes and Fathomiers for the invite. I'm on my way to Scotland and couldn't attend (at least my boat made it to the meet), however I look forward to seeing all of you soon. Paul thanks again !!!!

Re: Unofficial Tr-Club Meet Results

My apologies for placing Travis in Santa Cruz rather that hotbed of Spearfishing, Madera.

I have some faint memory of a post saying they drove from Santa Cruz the last time he came down and laid waste to our fish, but then maybe that was Phil? All those Northern Californians look alike. The mind is the second thing to go.

Anyway, I said these were "unofficial" results. The official version will get it right, whenever it gets posted.
