Yeah, too bad there's a size slot. I'm not intending to be a downer, but I'd like to have the freedom to shoot Godzilla if I see him.

All of our fish have been in the 28" range.... not very impressive... On a good note... we are seeing dozens of large lings everyday.... it kills to not be able to harvest one... but it does the heart good to see the populations doing so well. |

Re: Opening day of Ling!
Great. I figured that was probably the case as he was behind the animal and the gun was in the front of the animal. FABULOUS elk, by the way. Looks 400 class to me. Congratulations on the animal of a lifetime.

OK, here's what a big (45") female looks like head on. Last thing you see if you are a rockfish.

Re: Opening day of Ling!
Nav - Great pic!! Got a side view? How do you tell it's a female? What do you figure it weighed?
Thanks Northstar. It was my bro's first elk hunt... I scouted all summer for him & we got it after ~10 hunts that fall. He's spoiled for life... |

Re: Opening day of Ling!
Steep - Ha! Isn't that funny the way the kids and newbe's get the huge one's? Got my biggest buck when I was 14, never seen a bigger one since, my two boys each got big 4x4's when they were 13 - it has all been down hill from there.
I think it is a conspiracy to get new guys hooked and keep them hunting the rest of their lives! Sounds like you did your brother a good turn - hope he REALLY appreciates it.

Re: Opening day of Ling!
steep,
Not a side view of that one, but here's another big female. This one is in a marine park in the Seattle area, is in that same range , maybe 42-43". This picture is from early December, and she is very pregnant. That's why the belly is so huge; filled with eggs. The chart here: http://www.fisharc.com/derbies/20-20...h_Weight_Chart puts a 43" fish in the 30-35 pound range. Hard to tell sex underwater except by size. In Puget Sound every fish over 38-39" is female. The males stop growing. Out of the water you can tell sex as the males have a little fleshy deal right by their vent, but it's a bit disgusting... Probably more than you wanted to know. |
