Lost Gun - PowerPlant Kelp

A friend of a friend (temporarily distancing myself ) lost his gun at the PowerPlant kelp between Oceanside and Dana harbors. I know few people dive it because it's always green brown water with 5 eyed fish. If you are driving by, a quick check on the north west corner would be appreciated assuming you will give it back to him. He shot a fish, detached the shoot line and then tied the reel line to a kelp. (Not sure why he did so) While dealing with the fish, the current kicked up and pulled the gun down and out of sight. He isn't on spearboard, so I am dropping a line for him. It's a wooden gun by the way... Thank You!

And, Tubby and Fluffer don't even try to get revenge here for the baby killing bait you guys swallowed on bloodydecks.

Re: Lost Gun - PowerPlant Kelp

Might possibly be there tomorrow. if this new long swell didn't ruin the viz.
Was he diving there today? Can I get a condition report?

A more specific location would help.

I dropped my ONO last week, in strong current, and a fellow spearo helped me spot the float line, that I didn't think would surface, at La Jolla. I had clipped the butt end tuna clip to my current line at the stern. Didn't clip it carefully, and it fell off. The gun drifted about 50 yards before stopping> I put on a tank, and looked for 30 minutes, but just not far enough.

Any way the fellow was about 60 in a small black boat that looked like a whaler.

Thanks overdue.

It was a Friday. I was out Sat. and the south wind with strong southern running current had the kelp down. It was a hazy 20 feet at 25-60 feet down. Its probably something similar given the wind mellowed but the swell has been consistent.

I am not sure if I can get too much more specific on the location. There is a distinct north west corner to the kelp. He was right there. If there are other details that would be helpful, I can ask for answers... Good luck if you go...

all reel guns should have one or two popper floats attached...shoot the fish, pop the float(s) and chase the fish down, recovering the gun later...

Hmm... That sounds like you might as well use a float line if you are going with popping floats. The newbie friend definitely did it wrong. I have to catch up with him to hear the whole story and rationale or lack there of. Personally when in kelp I just fight the fish immediately after the shot. (Variable effort based on my confidence in the accuracy of the shot) If it takes a substantial amount of line, I work it until I am above the fish all the time with gun in hand or very close. Extra line is reeled back onto the reel while catching breath. Once straight up and down, dive and cut out the fish and collect the gun right after coming back to the surface. Fairly straight forward in theory and no float needed. Not really sure how the "tie the gun to the kelp" even came into it with the friend. The bummer is he is a cool guy and starting to get the hang of it...

The size of the fish and how many spotted always help in a recovery effort.

Re: Lost Gun - PowerPlant Kelp

I went by there today, and the water looked too green to look for lost guns or not-lost fish.

Impressive that you were diving Bill. Today did not seem like much of a diving day. Heavy drizzle, cold, strong south swell, some wind. At least that is what I told myself while head down working all day.

And let go of the keyboard Fluffer or I am not retrieving your next surface shot. Last time I checked, I haven't lost a gun! Leave it to you and BK!
