Gotta love shark week!!!!

I love watching shark week and hearing them say the best way to get attacked by a shark is to freedive spearfish. It makes me feel a little more uncomfortable in the water, atleast for a couple of weeks I hope to never run into the tax man.

Re: Gotta love shark week!!!!

I look forward to a FRIENDLY encounter with our toothy friends. Such a cool animal i'm sure it's an amazing feeling to swim with them....to an extent.

I'm doing a sand tiger dive in NC for my bday in a couple weeks. (leaving the gun on the boat) Can't wait.

Sorry, Shark Week has become F-ing lame!
The same shows year after year portraying sharks as nothing but mindless human killing machines feeding into the overall public ignorance. Its interesting to compare the amount of shows themed around shark attacks, "most dangerous sharks", and anything "jaws" to how many programs that even fail to mention the 100 million+ sharks killed every year by humans mostly for tastless shark fin soup.
I mean they have a whole WEEK dedicated to sharks yet every year we see the same programs over and over again mostly talking about shark attacks and nothing about our impact as humans towards them. I think its pretty pathetic that as a society, the only way you can market sharks on television is by portraying them all as mindless human killing machines. I remember loving shark week as a kid, back then it was somewhat educational but these days...

Re: Gotta love shark week!!!!

The timing is wonderful. I'm about to leave for 2 weeks in Baja, diving Guadalupe Island for the first week and San Benitos/Cedros Islands for the second week. And it seems like every time I turn on the discovery channel, they're showing a great white cruising around and Guadalupe island is in the background... I'm going to be a little twitchy in the water there, that's for sure...

Edit: Austin, I agree. Its the same old stuff year after year. They focus on shark attacks about 90% of the time, depicting sharks as fearsome killers, but then they toss in a couple of lines here and there about how "misunderstood" sharks are. If they want to show how misunderstood they are, why do they provide hours of footage perpetuating the public's perceptions!? Discovery Channel has gone down hill... (I mean, Oprah as the voice over for "Life"!? I'm still pissed about that one.)

X1,000,000

I've watched it EVERY year since it's been on and have seen the same programs year after year. Back then it was cool to me, but now its just the same dumbed down hooplah.

But Air Jaws 2 last night was pretty cool with that slow mo! Best show to come out of Shark Week in a while..

Thank God someone finally said that.

Totally 100% agree with you. I was saying that yesterday to my ol' lady. What happened to the educational shows? It's all "attack" this and "bite" that. I'd dive with you guys anytime

I agree, shark week is lame!!!!!!

I get so bored watching the same scenes just from different angles. I bet some of that video 'edited' in, is old footage anyway.

+12

They take a 6 second clip of a shark jumping out of the water, put it in super slow motion so it lasts for 1:30, play that like 10 times and fill the rest if the time with crap so they can make an hour tv show out of it.

Re: Gotta love shark week!!!!

I'm watching Sharkman right now and it's pretty cool. He is trying to hypnotize Great White Sharks by touching their noses and putting them into a "tonic" state. They are also experimenting with shark repellent to help save 10's of thousands of sharks from being mistakenly caught on fisherman's long lines.

Re: Gotta love shark week!!!!

Discovery has really gone downhill, much to my horror. Haven't seen Shark Week this year yet.

I blame it on Discovery's COO, Peter Liguori, who joined Discovery in December after a stint at Fox Broadcast Co.

Ever notice how all the shows and marathons on Discovery are now motorcycle/hotrod builds, swamp/heli/EXTREME logging, crab/swordfish fishing?

Even the survival shows are redundant - the same techniques for a handful of generic environments (alpine, desert, rainforest, etc) rehashed by different hosts. There's a husband and wife duo now and I wish a bear would eat her whiny ass already.

It's not the Discovery channel I knew as a kid

If you dont want to run into the Tax man that much, you better just stay out of the water. I believe he sees you all the time but you just dont know he is there. I just try not to act like food so they will leave me alone. It has worked so far...

Staying out of the water isn't going to work for me. If it happens it happens. Anybody want to share their encounter stories?
