Spearfishing/Freediving out of Osterville?
Heading up to Massachusetts on Tuesday for work, will have access to boats and would love to get out to do some freediving and maybe shoot some fish... A few questions first though:
I usually dive in south florida, so i know to expect colder water off the cape. What size suit should i plan to wear this time of year? What sorts of fish are out there/how deep? And if anyone wouldnt mind PMing me some numbers for any reefs or wrecks i'd really appreciate it; even the public numbers would be awesome. Thanks alot guys, safe hunting... |

there a google map and coordinates for some of the wrecks in there. cape is a large area which is a totally different beast if you dive the buzzards bay, the outer cape, the lower or the upper shore. on the upper side you might need a 5 mil considering you are used to warmer water. most of us do fine with a 3, on the lower cape a 5 might be toasty depending on the weather. p.s. no spearing striper in MA, it's illegal p.p.s. depth ranges from about 15ft to as much as you can do. shallow it's mostly tog and striper, sometimes barely legal cod, flounder is not a rarity but if you are up to it (100+ft) and don't mind the limited viz you should talk with somebody who runs fishing charters, i've heard of places where monster cod is more common than flies on a dead rat. don't have the numbers though . there's also somebody on this board who had a nice encounter with some mahi recently.
