Welcome to New Members
Seen a couple more guys from California register the last couple of days, and would love to get this section off the ground. What can you tell us about where you shoot?
Are all people from California this shy?

Hows it going? I'm from the Bay Area of California and spear fish any where from Santa Barbera to Fort Bragg. Its a great area with the only real problem being over fishing leaving none to be speared. This year Lingcod, Greenlings and Rockfish are all closed to fishing. The only fish that you see in abundance are Perch and we all know how exciting it is to shoot a perch. Oh well, at least we can still go after abalone for a good portion of the year.

Bradly640 - Wellcome!
I lived in Corona del Mar (down in Orange County) back in the early 90s back before I was I diver. I know they catch lobsters there. I understand that you have to do it by hand (no nets or snares allowed). I used to go up to Oxnard to salmon fish out of Ciscos in the Channel Islands. I know they also have diving there and the big fish to shoot are the white seabass and the halibut. I've also heard about your California sheepshead (the red and black ones - unlike our sheepshead here). Do you get any of those fish where you're at?
My Mom and Dad used to live in Santa Maria. When I visited them in the Fall, I used to albacore fish out of Virg's Landing in Morro Bay and out of Avila. It was alot of fun live chumming and live baiting the albacore. Does anyone out there attempt to spear them? I know you have salmon in the Bay area. Can you spear salmon or is that impracticable or illegal? I seem to recall that you were required to net (not gaff) the ones that you caught on hook and line. Hey Bradly, welcome to Spearboard.
In the last issue of spearfishing magazine I was reading about some of the problems in California with fish population. Evidently, it's one of the only states to invoke areas closed to recreational fishing. Here in Florida, that is something we keep on our toes about. The San Francisco Bay area is about my favorite place to visit. Anyone who has never been to San Francisco needs to go at least once in their life. Thanks for the input. Scott

Sask, welcome to spearboard. Glad to see some of you Californians trickling in. I think you'll find this a good place to hang out and get some good tips.

I am going to be competing in my first meet at the Pacific Coast Championships in Oct of 2003. They are to be held in the San Simeon area. San Simeon is packed with lots of fish and lots of size!
I saw a mako there three weeks ago in less than twenty feet of water. I figure it was cruising the shore looking for wandering seal pups as the elephant seals are/were puping then. Trust me I got out quickly! No use taking the risk. However, I did manage to spike a few sheephead for the dinner table that night. Anyone else in here going to the PCC's? Mike |

Hello everyone! I just moved back to CA after a 16-year absence, and I'm itchin' to get back into spearfishing and scuba diving. Does anyone know of any freediving/spearfishing clubs in the Orange County area? I'd appreciate any help.

Hey, I am in the north end of L.A. county. I have a few friends that like to spearfish. I don't know too much about the local clubs but would like to get a trip up soon for spearfishing above San Simeon.
Let me know, Mike |

My name is Mike. I'm from central California. I usually dive the Channel Islands. I bug hunt, spearfish, hookfish, and landhunt; sometimes with success.
