1st lobster dive of the season and a PB...

I finally made it out for a lobster dive last night... headed down to Zuniga Jetty with a buddy. We saw Michael (O'cino on SB) as we were getting ready to launch. How'd you guys do?
We brought some hoop nets along too... dropped em and then continued on with diving the jetty. the SD bay side was really slow. tons of fish but not too many lobsters and none were looking legal. We decided to cross over to the opposite side and within a minute I was staring at this dinosaur. he was in all of about 3-5 ft. chillin on the rocks. Went 6.2lbs and is definitely my personal best. I found another one that was about 1/4" over legal but he managed to escape as I was putting him in the bag. DOH! My buddy managed 1 about that size as well. Hoops produced nada.

Viz- 4-8ft.
Water temps- mid 60's

We were out at the low slack tide and all was pretty smooth. Saw some big ol grumpy sand bass... 5-7lbers. Tried to stab one w/ my knife but he decided that wasn't gonna happen. The lobster action could have been more consistent but all in all it was a great dive.

That's a good way to start off the season! My first dive this season only brought one barely legal bug.

Re: 1st lobster dive of the season and a PB...

Congrats on the PB Ryan! That's dinner for 4 Glad you two had a great time.

Charles is totally hooked on getting on bigger water, as he used to only freshwater fish. First fish he caught was a sculpin , and I showed him how to grab it without getting stuck.

Got 9 legal bugs, but let a few go to get him started on good take-ethics, and being selective. I'm certain he's ready to try hunting with a polespear.

In the end, Charles went home with enough bugs for dinner saturday with his wife...and that ensures another late night trip

9 legals...Dang, that goes to show how much i have to learn! The sculpin were littered all over the place. had to be cautious around some spots they were so thick. Glad to hear you guys had a great time too. We'll have to actually stick to planning a dive sometime REAL soon... i'll give ya a call
