Canon S95 Vs G12

Feel free to give out your opinions and recomendations.

My old Canon 870IS got flooded last summer and I am looking to upgrade with one of the new canons.

I am looking at the Canon G12 and S95

for the HD video capabilities, point and shoot, underwater settings and the opportunity of shutting VIDEO and PHOTO at the same time during the same dive.

I personally like the IKELITE underwater cases for the G12 or S95

I know GO PRO is a cheap way to go and the camera does great job but has its limitations, I personally like to see in the LCD what I am shooting at. I know some people can get really good at centering the camera but is a lot of trial and error to get it right.

I found several reviews in case you are interested.

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

Canon S95 Digital Camera: $399.99
Ikelite Housing for Canon S95 Digital Camera: $325
Total= $725

Canon Powershot G12: $499.99
Ikelite Housing for Canon Powershot G12 camera: $650
Total= $1150

...and don't forget the $50 memory card!

I had problems with my Canon housing for my G10. If I were going to get another housing for it, I would buy from Ikelite...but I'm not going to. I'm going to buy a GoPro if I can ever afford it. The following is my reasoning and my recommendation to you- I would recommend a GoPro for video, and a small digital compact with housing that does not have HD video, but will take still photos, of the quality that you are looking for. This might end up being near the same price that you would be paying for the above cameras, and if one or the other flooded, you would only be out half of your total cost and still have one working camera.

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

look in to the canon loyalty program ,you might be able to trade your old flooded canon for a discounted canon upgrade . i traded an s45 that was broke for a g11 for about 250.00 ,just call canon support and ask about the program and what cameras are available hope that helps.phil

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

you might want to check out the e-pl1 by Olympus

the senor in it is way bigger then the g12

the raw files can be awesome to work with in photoshop

its big and clunky but takes awesome photos

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

I looked at those two cameras and ended up with the S95 due to size. The G11 is a nice camera but it was too big to mount on my gun. The S95 takes really nice pics but I do not like the flash po up design.

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

The really big fault of the g12 and s95 is that they do not autofocus while recording. Whatever you start with is what you have; if you're focused closein distant objects will be blurry. You wont be able to tell from the LCD, only on the computer. That is the big reason I got a Lumix lx5 over the s95 as my camera, but have a gopro with nodded lens for diving. From my understanding, the g12 and s95 have the same image sensor, so image quality potential for either is the same. The micro 4/3rds cameras (like the Olympus) uses a much larger sensor for better image quality, but comes at a cost, is larger and cases might be difficult.

I saw a post with someone using the Panasonic lx5 underwater and was impressed with their photos. If I wasn't on the iPhone, I'd look I up for you. Another plug for the lx5 is the video format it uses is actually much better than the canons.

All that said, take my recommendations with a grain of salt because I've only done a lot of research, but I did buy an lx5 a couple weeks ago and have been impressed. Try dpreview.com and their forums if you haven't yet.

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

I'm going to have to agree with Jimcuda.. Lx5 is pretty nice. the downfall is the price of the housing. There is only one housing company that makes an underwater housing for it..... www.10bar.com .. I have a Panasonic LX3 and I love it!!!

Also, the Olympus PL1 is pretty good too! Ultimately, it's going to come down to $$ and what you are expecting the footage you want to shoot.

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

Thanks to everyone for all the advice, thoughts and suggestions.

I am still in research mode, looking around at all my options.

If you questioned what I am planning to do with the camera is:

1. Underwater footage
2. Underwater photos
3. Point and shoot camera for special ocasions, trips, etc

Everyone has great input on this cameras and other new cameras in the market, I am interested to know more, what makes your favorite camera the best?

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

I know these two reviews are intended for surface photography but should give you a little more info. I have a g12 which I use for my "play camera" and the only reason I purchased it over the s95 is that I wanted it big so I didn't lose or break it. Both make great pictures.

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

Thanks for the info Matt.

I wanted to replaced the camera that was flooded last summer (Canon 870IS) with either the S95 or G12.

I am inclined for the Ikelite uw cases because are clear and you can see if is leaking!!!!!OMG

Another inportant feature is that you can add WIDE angle lenses which restores the 28mm wide angle that is lost with the UW case.

But I am interested in also shooting HD videos underwater and I will need to add the WIDE lenses to make it worth it. Without Wide angle lenses you loose so much of the action!

Both Ikelite Wide lenses for the S95 or G12 are around $325, I don't know which one will perform better?

Ikelite Wide Lenses
W-20 with 67mm threads http://www.ikelite.com/web_two/w20lens.html
W-4 Wide angle http://www.ikelite.com/web_two/wd4dome.html

What do you think out those two Ikelite Wide Angle lenses are better?

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

I took this test video with my S95 and the Canon case. I spent almost $600 for the setup. The case is also clear so you can see if you are taking in water.

Re: Canon S95 Vs G12

I've been looking at the G12 and the S95 too.
I found some good info on www.kenrockwell.com and DPReview.com had some good side by side reviews of the G12 and Panasonic LX5.

I'm inclined to buy a G12 as I've had a G6 at work for many years and it's never skipped a beat.

BTW, I noticed Fry's electronics had the G12 for $399. Not sure if the sale is still going on.

Watch out when buying from Fry's. Their return policy sucks.
