San Diego Report. New Calico PB and a Bunch of Bugs

Made two dives out in the San Diego area today. The first was with Garo, Chris, and my girlfriend Halsey. Vis was 10-15 in 20ft of water. We all got bugs, Garo with a limit and Chris and I with three each. The bugs were all of good size too. After about two hours I spotted a grouper looking calico. It gave me a good broadside shot. The shaft entered just behind its right shoulder and out its left gill plate. I couldn’t believe the size of this fish. I’ve never seen anything like it. We didn't weigh it, but it was 23.5 inches long.

First dive’s catch…

Beautiful fish…

Later in the day, I headed south and dove with my buddy Justin and his friend Cheyne. The vis was worse, but at 8ft in 10ft of water, still easily doable. I finished up my lobster limit and got a nice cabezon. Justin got five very, very nice lobster, and Cheyne threepronged his first cabezon, which was quite a pig for southern California.

I got back to the girlfriends house and had the pleasure of helping my friend Justin fish print my calico.

Justin printing…

The first of three prints…

And after that, we had dinner...Boiled and broiled lobster, Israeli couscous with roasted carrots and fennel, and roasted sweet potato fries.

Chris- Like last time, it was a pleasure diving with you!

Cheyne- It was great meeting and diving with you. Lets do it again tomorrow.

Kirby, that's an AMAZING calico man. What a beast. I wonder how old that guy is? Congratulations.

Man that sucks I shot a calico with the same exact length the other weekend but never weighed it. Congrats on the fish though and thanks for sharing.

Nice collection of bugs and a very solid PB calico. Quite a successful day. That fish print is awesome! My friend has a company back east that does the same thing...yours is the first print I've seen of a calico though. Does he make t-shirts/art out of them??

Great Job guys! You just motivated a little more for diving tomorrow, seems like the bugs are moving back to the shallows after the rains.

Calico looks 7 - 8.5 lbs, beautiful fish

Get a fish scale, I was always thinking fish were 1 - 10lbs heavier depending on the species.
