Bugs and Flatties at Cat. Going out in style...

Alas, another lobster season has come and gone, which leaves me sad. The week started off less than stellar for me, with my girlfriend sitting me down on Tuesday and saying that she was kinda over the beard. Long story short, I shaved it and cut my hair. Bummer because I was really feeling the whole Hemingway thing, but whatever... Then I was scheduled to go out to Cat Friday with Dave (5150dude), but we got shut down by the Tsunami. But JB saved my week when he said we'd make the run Saturday and get in the last bug dive of the season and look for some flatties.

We arrived at the island after a lumpy crossing to less than desirable conditions. The water was kinda green and hazy, which made hunting up tight for halibut quite the feat. We wound up spooking a bunch and shooting zero. I had grabbed a couple of bugs on the last frustrating flattie dive, so JB decided that we'd do some daytime bug hunting.

Pulling up on my favorite rockpile, we immediately saw that unfortunately, the conditions were really no better, but we jumped in and I pulled 5 really good quality bugs, most in the 3-4lb range and one giant. JB worked on one for a while that was a solid 8lbs, but just couldn't get him out. After that ordeal, I dragged him over to the cave I was working, and he grabbed a pair of nice 4lbr's.

So at this point, we have 10 really nice bugs and it's not even dark yet. So we take some quick pix and motor over to another spot. As we pound some sandwiches and energy drinks, waiting for it to get dark, I figured I'd jump in and look for a flatty up on this small stretch of beach. Within 5 minutes, I shoot one and swim him to the boat and JB grabs a gun and jumps in. Shortly after, he shoots a real thick one. So now it's dusk and we each have some halibut.

Jumped back in and finished off the bug limits pretty quickly in the dark. Zipped back across the channel and back at the house at 9:30. Gotta love that... The bugs are safe from me for another 6 months.

Great write up Sandy I always read your posts. (especially from Cat.)

You always seem to slay the halibut and bugs.

You know what, Tony... I do and I'm thankful for that and don't ever take it for granted. Being in the ocean is the biggest priority in my life, so I make sacrifices in other aspects of it, so I can dive as much as I do. I've noticed as I've gotten older, it takes more to actually do that, but not that much. I still have the exact same fire that's been burning in my heart for mother ocean that I did back when I was a kid in Sicily and Greece, where my parents bought me my first balco sub speargun 30 years ago. In many ways, I'm still that little boy who was the first one in the water and always the last one out. I don't think that will ever change.

I can sure relate to what you say Sandy.

In all aspects of life, this profound statement is true:

Use it or Lose it!

Thanks for posting Sandy. This board has been suffering lately from a lack of reports. I'm loving the left eye, right eye halibut.

Sounds like a great trip.

Just to bust your balls a bit, didn't you once say this?
