Open muzzle reinforcement
Does anyone have a gun with an open muzzle...like Riffes, with a slot in the front of the gun for the wishbone... that has a plate that fits in the slot & screws in ...essentially making it a closed muzzle?
I'd appreciate seeing how it is bolted in. |

Re: Open muzzle reinforcement
Thats Rich
If you use the search, you will avoid posting questions covered before. I just finished a muzzle similar to woodguys, but I used a countersunk screw through the top, with a nut on bottom countersunk. Dont have a pic as the epoxy is drying as I type. Bryan P.S. Dont take Rich the wrong way ![]() P.S.S. Is it "countersunk"?

I'd appreciate if you would post a picture of your gun's muzzle when you have time...I was thinking about attaching the spacer the way you have done it, just wondering if I left enough wood. It would be nice if the spacer/ attacment could be removed for band replacement, but still attached to the gun... so no lost parts... can't picture a way to do it though. I wanted to make a gun that was short enough to fit in my kayaks hatch, and real easy to replace bands on the water...was going for a riffe style, but I don't think I left enough wood at the top & bottom of the muzzle...it's iffy whether the muzzle could snap off while loading the bands. Re: Open muzzle reinforcement
From my point of view the slot is only stressed under two conditions:
1) When the gun is not loaded or shot, the bands exert some level of stress due to compressing them into the slot, forcing the slot open. 2) When you drop the gun on the muzzle forcing the slot closed. In the first situation the insert provides no stress relief at all. The screw could provide stress relief if it connects the top and bottom of the slot. In the second situation, the insert will provide stress relief, but you probably need to drop it pretty hard, jump up and down on the muzzle, or swing it like a baseball bat into a wall to really care. What I'm saying is, IMHO, the spacer is more of a cool aesthetic embellishment than a structural feature. So don't stress out (pun intended) over how much wood you take out to capture the insert.

Hi Gary, I think the purpose of the insert is so you can screw the top/bottom half of the muzzle together, and it has something to gauge how far to screw the nut on...otherwise you could overtighten the pieces...pulling the top/bottom of the muzzle together.... and stress them in a whole different direction. |

Re: Open muzzle reinforcement
I use longer line anchor screws that go almost to the bottom of the track to reinforce the stock. Never had a problem.

Re: Open muzzle reinforcement
Wow!! Great looking gun. Is it padauk?
The muzzle shape looks amazingly sleek. Wish I could do epoxy like that! I might not have enough material to get the fasteners in....I might just make the power band slot a little larger in the vertical direction for now, should relief some of the stress created by the squeezed bands. |
