Fathers Day Weekend Dive

Just wanted to say Happy Fathers Day to all the Dad's out there. Father's Day is usually a bit of a melancholy day for me. In memory of my Uncle Glenn, the man who served as my surrogate father, I always try to fish or dive on this day every year. This year, I focused helping others have a good time w/ their kids.

I'm very happy to say that this weekend was a great success with good company and fantastic weather. Saturday, I got to see one of my Fathomier Brothers take his two daughters freediving and spearfishing. These girls will very likely be killers just like their Dad. Also went out w/ Paul and his son John. I took my Riffe polespear and camera out. I helped John spot lots of Underwater wildlife he'd never seen before, including several 4 ft plus angelsharks and a midshipman (it sang to me!) He also got a lot of halibut practice.

At one point, he got his shaft stuck into the reef - REALLY stuck. So, I showed him how to use the shaft removal tool found on the Riffe dive knives. I use the terminator II. The shaft removal tool is the notch machined into it towards the hilt of the knife. It fits the sear catch of the shaft. You simply meet the notch with the sear catch and torque/twist the shaft round and round until it pulls right out of the reef. I'm writing about this, as this is a question I've gotten emails/PMs about.

I'll let Paul tell his own story about the dive w/ his son and the weekend - I wont steal his thunder. In short, John did very very well and outshot his dad with the biggest fish!

I cruised around on my own a bit solo for part of the day... It was nice spending the day to reflect and remember the man who taught me how to fish. I did some exploring some parts of some reefs I've always just passed over and never really explored. Found some great Cabezon and up to 25 ft visibility in some places. Saw a lot of life out there. Could not have asked for better weather this weekend.

Hope everyone had a great weekend - I'm happy this year was a good one for me.

Re: Fathers Day Weekend Dive

Nice write up and catch. it sounds like a good dive. I had cabezon leftovers from saturdays dive, for dinner tonight. Cooked "al Maya" whole on the bbq, in a foil pouch with hot 3/4 cooked root vegie chunks (onion, yam, baby 'taters, and jicama) and cilantro, garlic, and olive oil, and chillies.

My kids gave me a good day, but my Dad gone 10 years now is much missed on this.. Im sorry you cant be with your uncle.

But the diving, its good for me, and I know it made my dad happy to see me enjoying myself so much. Its great to enjoy life, as its inevitably mixed with loss
