Weight belts
Is a weight belt really needed for spearfishing? The diving I'm doing would be at most 15 feet? How safe is it to have one? (in case of shallow water blackout?)

Re: Weight belts
They are very important for lobstering and looking under ledges. The risk of shallow water blackouts at 15 feet is not significant, just make sure to exhale slowly when returning to the surface from a dive. Remember to always dive with a buddy!

Re: Weight belts
The belt is really only used to counter acts your boyancy (which diminishes the deeper you dive)
Most of the time your in a wetsuite... and your fins and other gear will add some float... and without some weight your not going to get very deep ![]() you should still be able to float on the surface, even with your belt on. |

Re: Weight belts
I'm diving mainly in shallow areas(LI sound) so from the shore it doesn't get to much deeper.

Re: Weight belts
You will know if you need some weight. The shallower you dive, the more weight you need to be still in the bottom. Anyway, from your question, I realize that you need to dive with a more experienced buddy.

Re: Weight belts
PJ, for our waters you may be able to get away with a full 3 mil open cell suit for the rest of hte summer and in that case, no weight belt required assuming your not a fat dude. for a 5 mil suit though, i doubt youd be able to get under water, either way, you'll know as soon as you try to dive whether you need it or not.

Re: Weight belts
Without a weight belt, you will need to kick harder to get to the bottom and that will increase your lung function, therefore decreasing your bottom time
