My First Black Rock

Me and my spearing buddy were going to go to Cayucos and ended up in San Simeon. We hit the water at high tide about 3pm and were in the water for a good couple hours without shooting any fish. I got a set of Dock's and was not having any trouble equalizing. We got out for about an hour or two and tried some hook and line fishing. Nothing with that. The sardines wouldn't stay on the hook. It was nice being in the sun and we were both a little reluctant to get back in but we decided on about another hour in the water before the sun went down. We only had one weight belt that was my buddy's and he was letting me use it so I was diving. I was using a pole spear and was seeing fish in a school so I went down and got one. It was a Perch. I then got a Black Rock Fish. We too those two in. I hadn't brought the stringer because I didn't know I was about to get several more. A little while later I get another Perch this one bigger than the first. I ask my buddy if he wants to take the belt and try for some or if he wants me to keep going. He tells me to keep going. The next is the biggest of the day a BLK Rock. As I think it is about time to head in I get another Black Rock and then we go in. Stoked we are carrying on and as the sun is setting Andrew snaps a pic and we get all the stuff together and go. I tell him how I feel like I'm still swaying with the waves standing there!

Is this normal to feel like your still in the water? Also the docks worked but I think some water was in my ear and they felt like they didn't fit perfect. I am interested in getting the JBL's. Does anyone know where I can find a pair on the Central Coast near SLO? Also how do I post a pic? Is there a way other than using a URL?

Re: My First Black Rock

I had the water in the ear problem and it still exists for me. Every once in a while it comes back and when I scratch my head it has a hollow sound in my left ear. I went to the doctor and he said I was congested. Whatever.

Because of this I bought the JBL's and they are great. I went with the medium and they fit good. The only complaint I would have is when you have your hood on it deforms my ear a bit and breaks the seal a little. With that being said there is a deeper seal on the jbl plug that has never been broken. Been diving and swimming with them 20+ times with no water ever getting in my ears.

Your buddy is a smart guy. I'd stay in the boat hook and line fishing too if I was off of San Simeon...

As for the earplugs maybe try depth perceptions? Pretty sure Chuck carries JBL stuff.

Re: My First Black Rock

Hi there and thanks. I just called a Moondoggies Surf Shop here in SLO and they have the JBL's. Davej your Avitar is hilarious! Love it! Thanks Kelppad sounds like they work great for you! I see that your in Monterey. My spear partner took his diving cert up there and is talking about how it would be cool to go up for spearfishing. Maybe if we do get up there sometime you would show us around or want to dive with us?

Re: My First Black Rock

I had to move away for graduate school. Now I am in the oceanless Arizona. I am going to try to get on some freshwater stripers in the river here though. PM me if you want info in hunting that area. I can help you out.
