Offshore Spearing

Hey saw some of you other guys got offshore this past weekend. I went out with my dad for some trolling and we ended up with 3 small yellowfin and a marlin. Then on the way back in we found a few pots with life on them so I grabbed my gun and jumped in. By far the best and most exciting experience of my short spearing career. Definitely hooked of this bluewater stuff and I cannot wait to get back out there. Check out some of the action in the video.

Re: Offshore Spearing

Nice debut Stabe. Sick footage, I'm pumped to cook those Mahi next weekend. The Marlin looked awesome, was that the new flat lens?

Does anybody know what those black fish are called? Are they edible? they get really slimy if you put them in your livewell.

Re: Offshore Spearing

Thanks guys. Im using a gopro on the elastic head mount. I just got the mako flat lens and there was definitely an improvement in the underwater footage quality....

Tom I think those are pilot fish and I don't think they taste to good

Freakn awesome awesome video man! How far out were you and what size riffe do you have? I'm looking to upgrade for big stripers and some blue water hunting like you were doing.

Re: Offshore Spearing

Wow!! Great video. We call the slime fish - black ruff, only because we never made a positive id on them. I have two rules on my boat, one - no masterbating, two - no black ruff. Both are equally as disgusting. Thumbs up on the R&R stuff as well.

Re: Offshore Spearing

Those black fish around the pots are juvenile barrelfish

Re: Offshore Spearing

I was swimming around with one of those barrelfish the other day just off the beach. I was wondering what it was. Thanks.

Re: Offshore Spearing

Yea I caught a few of those around a buoy on the way out to go shark/bluefin fishing a few years back, I thought they would be decent live bait... all they did was slime up my livewell, gross.

I think the Viking catches adult barrelfish (20-30 lbs) on the offshore deepwater wrecks. They keep them and eat them, I've also seen them in the store, meat looks kind of like cod.

Re: Offshore Spearing

Nice Job on video...BUT...not a Blue Marlin and not 200lbs...most likely a roundscale spearfish or maybe a white marlin...60-80lbs
