Utahns: Quick Question

I recently went spearfishing for the first time on a trip to Virginia. I am interested in getting into it here at home (Utah), and have a couple of questions. Is it possible/reasonable to try and spearfish at the legal lakes/resevoirs here without a boat? If it is any other important info you would like to share would be appreciated.

Definitely. Shore diving works fine. Most of the time you have to stay by the shore anyways because it gets too dark too deep, especially in Deer Creek. Depending on the light at 35+ feet it gets black. There are plenty of places to put in, but the downfall is you can't change locations as easy.

Thanks. I'm in Salt Lake, so I figure I'd be a Deer Creek most of the time.

Re: Utahns: Quick Question

Boat is always better, but I shore dive all the time at deer creek. Starvation and Flaming gorge aren't as easy, but I've found some decent spots. Fish Lake is the best shore diving lake in the state in my opinion.

Please read the entire fishing proclamation and make sure you know the rules. Please play nice so we can keep spear-fishing open in Utah.
Thanks!

Re: Utahns: Quick Question

I hunt from both the shore and a boat. It can definitely be done, sometimes a boat just makes it much easier to cover more ground and scope out more spots.

P.S. I don't want to hijack this post, but if you are looking for a friendly group event, Dive Addicts is hosting a group shoot/competition at Fish Lake on Aug 6th. There will be people of all different abilities and experience. Here is the facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=147620058646307

Re: Utahns: Quick Question

I do MOST of my spearing from the shore and it has provided much more spearing time rather than taking care of the boat time! By the way, I have a 17 foot inflatable for sale needs a long shaft motor probably 25hp plus!
