You're right, especially around 8-9 seconds. I would have expected Todd Mansur to get that right. Maybe the video is not matched to the article, or

Or maybe its just more likely to attract more business if its called a GWS instead of a Mako.

Great marketing tool! I vote Mako but im not a shark expert. I do however dabble in marketing and this seems to be a great marketing tool.

Re: San Clemente GWS vid and article

fullscreen, 9-10 seconds.. pause it and look at the tail... I'd have a hard time calling it.

I think the captain probably got a better look at it than we do from youtube.

I guess he's never seen a mako in 47 years on the water and so wouldn't know what they look like, right? For those that don't get my sarcasm: It's pretty easy to be an internet QB. I believe the captain.

Edit: Guess it really doesn't matter. If it really was a 12 footer, I'd crap my wetsuit either way

Re: San Clemente GWS vid and article

10-12 foot would be a HUGE mako......much higher pucker factor then a GWS of that size IMO.

Re: San Clemente GWS vid and article

I'm no shark expert, but I am going to say GWS. It looks a bit grey and the 10-12 foot Mako I saw at SBI was much thicker at that length and more blue. In the article, they edited out the part saying it was swimming directly to the Barn. Yup and it's sister was going straight to San Mateo too.

Re: San Clemente GWS vid and article

yeah hard to say, kinda looks more like a juvey GWS the more look at it...people seem to see them quite often off the plant in San O and from the clffs at trestles and old mans....theyre out there. Cool either way. Thanks for postin

You may be right. I'd hesitate to put money on it either way based on just that video. But, the trailing edge of the dorsal seems too vertical for a GW, the pectoral fins look small, and the head looks small. Also the gradual fade to white from the flanks to the belly suggest mako.

Or waves, refraction and crappy video make it hard to tell. Plus I'm wrong a lot.
