First Wahoo With a Spear

It may be a Wee-Hoo. But, this little 8lb Wahoo is my first with a spear!

I dropped in on one of the local wrecks. The current was screaming as I hit the bottom. I nice yellow jack swam by and I decided to take it. This was my first yellow jack. After stringing him up, I saw the wreck coming into view. Once on the wreck, I was treated to a Wild Kingdom experience. With the ripping current and blue water, the wreck was swarming with bait. There was a school of 1-2" fish swarming a 300 lb Goliath. The swarm was so thick that I could only see small parts of the grouper when he moved. The blue runners were zipping through and picking off the stragglers. I positioned myself, so that I could peer into the current. The bait was so thick that I missed several opportunities at nice fish, when they burst though the school. Time was limited, so I picked out a decent yellowtail and strung him up while letting the current carry me away from the wreck. Several thousand of the small 1-2” fish came with me off of the wreck. I was bombarded by small predators as I made my ascent. First the blue runners came through, often bumping me as they scarf’ed up the bait. Then it was time for the bonito and mackerel to give it a go. I was making a stop at 40’ when I spotted the Wahoo. He came in for a look and then slowly moved off. I swung my gun up and kicked after him. I only went maybe 10’ before he turned broadside. Blam! Fish on! It was a poor shot that went through the belly. Luckily, he was kind enough to proceed to wrap himself up in the shooting line. I pulled him in by the tail and carefully slid one hand into his gills. I did not want to get too close to those little razor teeth. After some quick knife work, he was on my stringer. Oh yea, this was a good dive! It took me several minutes to untangle my shooting line and reload (because you never know…). I moved up to 30’ for another brief stop. I was still being swarmed by baitfish. I spotted a bigger ‘Hoo coming up from the depths. But, by the time I got my reel into free spool, he was gone. Oh well. I already had more fish than I could eat. There was not much left of the baitfish but the time that I got to the boat. Everybody in the food chain got to eat well this day.
