Exclamation Catalina Great White Shark attack caught on video!!!

A friend, Mark, that my dad works with and whom we dive with quite often was diving West Cove, Catalina, when a GWS took out a seal and then some... he took 2 videos. The first is slow with a breach attack early on, but the second video is constant action and truely unbelievable. Here is the e-mail that he sent;

Quote:
Howdy friends & neighbors-

Most of you already know I saw a big toothy critter kill a sea lion last week at Catalina. I made three dives that afternoon in the general area and was cleaning up my dive gear when I saw the shark hit the sea lion for the first time.

I just posted the unedited shark footage on YouTube in two parts. Part one has the shark hitting the sea lion for the third time. (It took me awhile to grab my video camera after I witnessed the initial attack.) Part two is some close up footage of the shark going after a second sea lion that should allow a positive I.D of the shark by one of you scientists out there. He also left a big circle hook in my bait receiver.

Part One: Shark Eats Sea Lion - Catalina Island Part 1 - YouTube

Part Two: Shark Eats Sea Lion - Catalina Island Part 2 - YouTube

Apparently this is not an uncommon occurrence, as I see at least three other videos on YouTube similar to mine. I’m also not the only one who can’t decide if they are looking at a big Mako or a medium size Great White. I do know that I’ll be sticking close to the kelp line for the rest of my dives at that location.

How about Tailsurfer's "friend" talking to the Seal. "get out of here, there is a SHARK!"

I laughed at that one too.

Looks like a Mako but at that size it is VERY hard to tell. Either way I did not need to see that I will be diving there tomorrow

Re: Catalina Great White Shark attack caught on video!!!

The narrowness of the snout and the pectoral fins makes me think it's a mako but the sheer girth of the fish makes it look more like a GWS. I can't be sure either way.
