good eats in so cal!

so this isnt really about diving, but it does have to do with fish and california, and i know there are a decent amount of guys on here from this area. tonight was my moms 47th birthday, so we all went out to dinner at a new restaurant in Simi Valley called the Market Broiler. it's pretty much a 100% seafood restaurant, with some salads and a couple steaks. on the front of the menu is a list of fresh fish they carry and you can order individually, grilled or beer battered, and your choice of 2 sides (the baked potato and cheese potatoes are BOMB). some of the selections include yellowtail, mahi mahi, yellowfin, ahi tuna, and maybe 15 or 20 other types that i cant remember right now. as you go through the menu, you will find various other seafood delights, such as the build your own entree section, where you can either build a 2 or 3 entree with 2 sides. some choices are thresher or mako shark, alaskan halibut, trout, tri-tip, and other things like these. you also get two sides with this. they also had a good variety of shell fish meals. prices were pretty reasonable at anywhere from $14-$25, or in some cases, market value of the fish. my yellowtail was the fish of the day, so it was only $10.95! normally $16. the 2 entree thing was $16, and the 3 entree was $19. depending on what you get in the entree it's +$1 or +$2.

the setting was really cool and made a diver/fisherman feel right at home. they had a fishtank with a few tropical fish in it, weathered signs that say "anacapa" or "smugglers cove"... hanging on the wall. they also had various fish hanging on the walls, such as bluefin, yellowfin, dorado, halibut, grouper, marlin, vermilion, WSB... so it was very fun to sit there and admire all the beautiful fish, and it brought back some great memories of the various fish i have caught. inside the actual restaurant is a mini fish market, where you can purchase different types of crab, clams, oysters, salmon, thresher shark, halibut fillets, different types of tuna, yellowtail, swordfish, shrimp, squid, and lobster tails (at 31.95$ a pound! this is when im truly happy im a diver!).

the customer service we had there was very good. our first server was a young kid and appeared to be very stoned, and was complained about by many tables, including ours, and one of his tables walked without paying. two other servers named kimberly and ray took over as our new servers, and TOTALLY made up for the previous inconvenience. they repeatedly apologized, as well as corrected any errors made by the original server. i ordered beer battered yellowtail with cheese potatoes and a baked potato, my dad ordered halibut, thresher, and steak. my mom got crab cakes and coconut shrimp, and my little sister got steak. when i got my food, the yellowtail was grilled, not fried, and i was given rice instead of my cheese potatoes. i told the new server this was incorrect, and he went to the kitchen to correct the problem (before i gave him back the food, i tried the grilled yellow, and it was deeeeelicious!). when he came back with my beer battered yellow, he DOUBLED the amount of fish i was supposed to get, to make up for the mistake. while we were waiting for the food, kimberly persistently tried to make up for the mistakes by offering us complimentary drinks, soups, and clam chowder. i accepted a clam chowder, and that was also amazing. she brought me 2 more bowls too, before i was even done with the first she also brought me a soda without me asking. the yellowtail turned out to be awesome, as well as the halibut, thresher, steak, crab cakes, and coconut shrimp. we also got free appetizers of shrimp skewers by bringing in an online coupon my mom had. those were very good as well, and they werent cheap on the number of shrimp they gave!

the customer service for the rest of the night was great, and i would highly recommend giving it a try.

If you like the place, post the review to yelp to help them out. Word of mouth and social media can do wonderful things .

Re: good eats in so cal!

sounds like they have a lil communication problem between kitchen and front of house, in your favor! We all like free food. Server seemed stoned, I worked every aspect of restaurants, and we were all stoned, everywhere, all the time. Come on, if you were making minimum wage wouldn't you? Should of hit him up for the goods!!! Food would've been even better.

A) we got hooked up with the food! B) you must have worked at some crappy restaurants where nobody ever gave tips. sure youre making minimum wage, but you make all your bank in tips, therefore being stoned wouldnt work in your favor. C) i have never smoked a thing a day in my life, so that doesnt apply to me
