Am I just slow on the up-take?

I was just on the DFG website checking the freshwater reg changes for inland salmon (yeah!! the American River is open again this year-limit of 2), and noticed the in-season regs for lingcod as of the publication dated June 6th. I knew they dropped the size limit to 22", but it also says spearing is open year round (instead of just April-November).

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/sportfishing_regs2011.asp
(click on the PDF of suplimental freshwater and ocean regulations)
Section 27.30 is Mendocino, but all the areas say the same thing

It says the book has a missprint (which I had a copy of), but the online version has been corrected.

Am I the only one that didn't know the ling season is 365 days a year now for divers?

Re: Am I just slow on the up-take?

I remember it was supposed to go into effect earlier but was delayed.

Regardless of the regs, I won't be taking any lings when they're sitting on eggs though.

Actually, I was more stoked about the freshwater salmon season.
I haven't been allowed to fish my favorite section of the American River for the last 3 years, and the last 6 have been a severe dissapointment due to the ever declining returns. Fingers crossed that the population is rebounding.

Russ Rossman? Let's go spank some Chinook real soon bro....

Re: Am I just slow on the up-take?

Yup. Lingcod year-round for shore-based anglers and divers. I spoke with one of the DFG biologists in charge of the rule change. The data indicates that lingcod stocks are healthier than they have been in a long time and because shore based anglers don't have any bi-catch of yellow eye rockfish, we were allocated the extra lingcod quota (whereas the commercial and boat-based rec fishing guys weren't because the maximum allowable bi-catch of yellow eye was already being reached each year).

I know I was there my good friend (that thread was from back in 2010).

Did a little searching and found Charlie's post from June 9th (my bad, I was in on that one also )

http://spearboard.com/showthread.php...ighlight=22%22

Saw the size limit reduced to 22" but for some reason, remember the season remaining the same (4/1-11/30) because of some legal delay.

Guess that ain't the case....

Awwwww please......

I was landing salmon in the American hand over fist while you were still pooping in your Pampers.....

Are you snagging them in the belly, or hooking them in the corner of the mouth (like the regulations state that you must...)?

Re: Am I just slow on the up-take?

That's good to hear. Down here I'm not actively looking for ling cod, so If I happen to stumble on one, then I'm not likely to remember the season. Now I don't have to remember.

And we do have a few. Here is one my buddy Jeff shot at one of our favorite wsb spots.

The salmon have been taking row pretty good for the last two weeks up here. You will be supprised where you can find the lings in the winter.

Just to make sure I'm not getting tripped up by reading comprehension, that means all divers, boat based as well as shore-based, right?

Yeah but you cant have any fishing gear on the boat if you have lings taken outside of the fishing season.
