Is it me or has anyone else found that aside from the Doctor Decompression Segment, that alot of folks at The Scuba Board seem to be very umm...militant ?

It DOES seem that there are a lot of real recreational (i.e. the take pictures, not souveniers type - that is the edible kind!!) diving people and seems to have a lot of newbies on it, but that is just my first impression. This board is definitely more liberal in terms of what can be said and has more experienced/hard-core divers and divers who do this for a living, in my opinion. I've only been checking out ScubaBoard for a week and haven't been able to post, so I CAN say moderators are slow getting things started for approving a new member to post... Interesting point though, I'll keep an eye out for them - militant ones that is!

Well really the situation is this,, some one had asked about a wreck that I frequint alot and was looking for some kind of info ,,,just about an out side survey or such. Iam thinkin thats a good way to plan a first time dive just an out side survey ,,, so i give em an brief description of what it looks like and a vid clip with good narration as to where thing are located .This turns in to well this guy isnt wearing a snorkle on the right side of his mask,oh my god he's not got doubles on surley he will die ...... guys its 80 fsw with no planned penetration whats the fuzz about? The original string started out with both participants saying no one was doing any penetration.... and all of the sudden the scuba nazi's show up and say "my how could you put this on our board some one will surly be killed <gasp>Lets be object8ive her guys we dont want any one callin PETA or the Manatee Club on us....this is a farliy simple advanced dive and thats IT . If you have any type of advanced knowlodge of what our dive is going to be like it will help a grat deal ...if you go beyond that and beyond you skills and training then your a dumb ass. Sorry had to vent .

Jeez! Sounds as if that discussion somehow turned and went seriously south! Don't think that you'll get that here!

I used to read scubaboard a bit . they were always deleting threads just when it started getting good .I remember there was one thread about why women with silicone breast implants can't dive with nitrox .it was really getting good when the nazi moderators got hold of it . I think I had about 6 posts in that thread . between the moderators and the anal divers it got to be no fun .I was always getting posts deleted .but I actually found out about spearboard from one of the guys on scubaboard.

Not surprised. Spent some time on that board, still not allowed to post BYW, today. Add to previous impression, a group that cannot agree to a single philosophy/topic - way too much debate, with citing sources, authors, etc. Also very polaric viewpoints - either you're with them or against...way too many viewpoints that think that their way is the ONLY one... "Don't wrestle with a pig - you both get dirty and the pig actually likes it" (author unknown but often quoted).
BUT, will gain what I can from them, as they seem to be very knowledgeable about issues and they have "experts" (i.e. MDs and people who actually READ these articles ) , but do feel very moderated there. It has it's place, but Spearboard is quickly beoming MY favorite place!

I've been there a coupla years, take a look at my profile.I've never had any serious attacks about spearfishing. The size of the board means there will be a diverse bunch off opinions represented.Ignoring any real obvious trolls in Internet Rule #1.I find a lot of very knowledgeable people there. We spearfish which means a lot of the common rules get thrown out.I am usually solo to some degree unless babysitting someone new for a coupla dives.I exceed 130' on air.I don't always plan my deco, but end up with it anyway several times a month.I look at Spearboard as my main resource for spearfishing and Scubaboard as a good way to connect with mainline divers. If you think SB if FUBARed go to RSD or FS.A lot of our members here started elsewhere and ended up here thru hookups from Scott and the Westside brothers.

Positive aspects of both sites. . .
I like scubaboard for the following reasons:
1. Technical data and performance information concerning scuba equipment is excellent. If you can filter through the thousands of posts, you can get some pretty good information about dive related equipment (tanks, regs, computers) 2. The dive medicine and tech. department has already covered just about every aspect of DCI, oxygen toxicity and just about every other aspect of dive related injuries. If anything, it has made me a more cautious and educated diver. The reasons I prefer Spearboard: 1. There aren't any PETA folks here, and killing things is a perfectly acceptable subject. 2. Political correctness does not rule supreme and our messages here are more on the order of what you might find at a bar. 3. Scubaboard seems almost too big. Here, there are guys I have never met but I feel I have gotten to know them through their posts. This brotherhood of the shaft, is unfounded on any other site. I love you guys, plutonically speaking of course. . . Hector |
