California Fish & Game Commission approved a revision to the regulations to open

This morning, the California Fish & Game Commission approved a revision to the regulations to open this year's abalone season on April 1.

Also they voted to increase the greenling bag limit to 10, within the normal RCG complex bag limit of 10.

Pardon my ignorance, but when did ab season open before the revision?

Re: California Fish & Game Commission approved a revision to the regulations to open

Bill,

The ab season usually opens April 1. Last year there was an emergency closure on the Sonoma County coast due to a red tie related abalone die off. Reports of 20%+ mortality rates were given.

The irony is that DFG performed an abalone population density survey after the the die off and determined that the poulation density had increased from the most recent survey despite the die off. However, the commission decided to implement the emergency closure prior to the survey results being revealed.

I guess they need to revise their survey mothodology.

This is the hitch and difference from any other year, this is from the DFG web site.

sonoma open except for a 2 month shorter season, read below DFG announcement
Season: In
the Fort Ross area bounded by the mean high tide line and a line drawn due south
true from 38°30.63’ N, 123°14.98’ W (the northern point of Fort Ross Cove) and
a line drawn due west true from 38°29.45’ N, 123°11.72’ W (Jewel Gulch, south
boundary Fort Ross State Park) abalone may only be taken during the months of
June, August, September, October and November

It was a "clean-up" action, since last year's emergency closure of all of Sonoma County would not have been lifted until April 3 otherwise.

Did you find this on DFG's site? I spent some time looking, but couldn't find it.
