LadyGaDivers Shoot it up at Marquesas, Florida Keys 031712
LadyGaDiver, Kelly, aka Killermermaid, orchestrated a fantastic dive trip for us to Marquesas, Florida Keys, which consisted of Kelly, Justin, Bobbie V., Jack and myself. We headed out with Capt Robert (Finz Dive Center), last Saturday, which just happened to be Paddies' day
, and we spent the day shooting up Lots of Fish. Was our first trip out with Capt Robert, and he really put us on some nice fish. We dove depths of 40-130' , water temps of 75, 50-80' vis, 1-3' seas. First dive, I come up on 3 Big African Pompano, and No BIG guns around . I took a shot anyways, and it tore off, all 3 bolted! Then Kelly shoots a nice hog, had 4 bigger buddies, I took aim at mine, which made it to the boat . All of our dives were just amazing, some drops 40' to start, then over the edge dropping to 200' +. I watched a film of Sheri Day diving the Marquesas and always wanted to do this trip. We Will def be back out again with Capt Robert. Oh, and yes, of course there were HUGE very friendly Groupers everywhere playing and smiling at us Following the dive, we had lunch at the Hurricane Hole Marina's restaurant, good food! Then of course enjoyed all the Key West festivities..... Here is a video and pics at the end of our catch. Enjoy Spearit Marquesas, Florida Keys, LadyGaDivers Spearfishing trip 031712 - YouTube=

Sounds like you had a great time. Too bad you lost those Pompanos - they are really good eating.

Re: LadyGaDivers Shoot it up at Marquesas, Florida Keys 031712
Spearit's right, this was great stuff, that I have been wanting dive in for quite some time. First drop, the captain dropped us on a big rock in about 130' and we encountered a nice variety of fish in cluding African Pompano, Cubera Snapper, Mangos, Hog fish and one, now dead, Lion Fish. Second drop, was a bank, great structure, nice tank management site from over 100' to 40'. On our high pressure steel 100s we were getting over an hour in some nice hunting grounds. The captain also dropped us in on a tower in 30', hey you gotta do something during your up time, we were hopeful that passing cobia, king or WAHOOOO would come check us out, but no such luck. I took my best to date Yellowtail, a "flag" at about 3 - 4 Lbs, 6 Lb Mutton Snapper, hogs and lobster. Tried out the Gopro, still getting use to it, check out the video link, and where best to mount it. It was a bit bumpy, but the captain new the waters and how to get back without getting beaten up, as we had an stiff east wind, nice ride out but bumpy coming back for a bit, then he got us tucked in tight behind the keys, in 4 - 6 feet of water, which made for a nice smooth....ride at about 26 knots. I would highly recommend this trip...great job Captain Robert, out of the FINZ dive center
![]() Have you heard of "KOAH" spearguns, made by John Ippolito, the owner/Captain of "Hypnautical" dive charter? If you are a local, most likely, if you own one if his guns, certainly. I just wanted to pass along a Spearit bought me one of his 54" models for Christmas and I am here to tell you, MERRY CHRISTMAS, that gun is pin point accurate all the way to the end of the shock cord. I am about to put a Rob Allen reel mount on it so I can transfer the reel back and forth between my new primary the "KOAH" and my now back up gun, the Riffe. The shaft diameter means it packs a punch when it gets there, even at 25', the end of the shock cord. The only fish that I have pulled the trigger on, and missed, was a very lucky 10 Lb snapper that caught me with only 2 bands loaded, going away. Every fish that I took last weekend was a stoner, a testament to how picky you can be about shot placement with this gun. I have used this gun to take over 20 various fish, with one missed shot, needless to say, I am impressed. Great Gun John.Last edited by Jupdiver; 03-20-2012 at 12:40 PM. |

Ahaha great. I was out diving with him a few weeks ago and said the same damn thing. All over the place. I had them following me around. I swear I could hear them laughing at us. I counted grouper on almost every dive and must have seen 30-40 of them. Most of them keepers, some not, but def plenty to write home about.

Re: LadyGaDivers Shoot it up at Marquesas, Florida Keys 031712
I would highly recommend Robert @ Finz. He helped with all our gear, dropped us on some good fish, was safety oriented and very easy going.
1st drop: Justin (obxdiveguy) and I swam around for a bit without seeing any fish worthy of shooting. I heard Judy's gun go off, but didn't see the pompano she was going for. We decided to go up, then I see 5 big hogs. The biggest is on to me so I take the closest one which is still decent size. Judy took another one. 3 minutes left til NDL so that was it. 2nd & 3rd drops: Shot at a big mutton and missed. He bolted. We landed a few more hogs and a lionfish. Saw a big loggerhead turtle. There were black groupers all over the place; it was such a tease!! ![]() last drop: Another hog, a mangrove, and lionfish. A puppydog eyed red grouper followed us for most of the dive. After a # of years diving, we had our first chance to swim with a pod of dolphins. In about 60ft of water, they were within 5-10ft of us. Looked straight at us, then swam away....it was an awesome experience although it almost doesn't feel like it really happened (wish we had a camera). As if that wasn't good enough, we see two loggerheads playing together on our safety stop. I thought I was going to see some turtle porn, but I guess they wanted their privacy
