Re: Want to trade spear gear for kayak.

I doubt you will be able to trade, but if you keep your eye on www.texaskayakfisherman.com's classifieds for a while, you can find a smoking deal.

By the way, kayaks rock for inshore spearing.

Oh man, I could write an article on this.

During the cold-front months, look for the turn-around after a front. The best is when the wind dies instead of staying strong and pivoting around.

Summer months like we are getting into, look for calm winds from the general SE direction.

What the wind did the day or two before makes a big difference

More tide movement will help the surf clear quicker.

Long-shore winds (IE the big spurt of NE wind we got yesterday morning) will mess it up for a bit.

Sometimes everything looks good but it still sucks, sometimes the conditions look marginal, but the vis is there

You can tell a lot from the seawall. See sand bars easily? Can you look into the breaking waves and see through?

It helps a lot to be into fishing, as you are already looking for calm days, and will be out there. Many times I go out to fish, and go back for the dive gear when I can see my paddle blade 5' down.

That's the Cliff's Notes version, good luck!

awesome info I go fish around port bolivar area, I have not seen much visibility there but will have my gear with me in the trunk, just in case I catch one of those days... having said that one particular time when I was at the freeport jetties-north side tip, early in the morning -someday june or july- and was real nice and very clear....did not have gear at the time. it is good to see it happens though.. thanks milkjug...

Re: Want to trade spear gear for kayak.

The kayak fishing in the galveston area is great. You'll enjoy the action. Go for tailing reds in the back marshes on top waters. Check texaskayakfisherman.com. It's been the gold standard for 15 years of yakking in SE Texas.

Not much in the way of diving there though. It's murk murk murk, though there is a walking beam steam engine from a civil war blockade runner inside the galveston jetties. If you catch it just right you can kinda make it out before you swim into it with your head (ouch!).

No problem, I am always down for a few beers and spear talk.

I'll agree with that. You lower coast boys get spoiled. Thats why it is so hard to find the several diveable days a year we get. Still beats the heck out of living in Dallas though

I don't go much in the channel. The constant current seems like it keeps it silty, but maybe I'm missing something... There is a wreck on the outside near the end that I have been hammering the speck on (with h&l). Haven't dived it yet, but it would be worth a shot on a diveable day. The only problem is that it is a long paddle, and you never know the vis till you get there.
