A federal policy promotes the use of drones by local law enforcement, and drone manufacturers are now pushing their products to the nation's 18,000 police jurisdictions. This raises the question of whether drones will be allowed to capture information normally requiring a search warrant authorized by a judge?

Syndicated columnist and IBD contributor Charles Krauthammer calls drones instruments of war suited for war. They should not be used domestically, he says.

He notes that you can hear a police helicopter but not a drone over your house, and argues that "the first guy who uses a Second Amendment weapon to bring a drone down that's been hovering over his house is going to be a folk hero in this country."

In a perfect world we would all like to see the cops avoid any of this but it isn't a perfect world. How would you have apprehended the suspect? Remember he was armed and just robbed a bank.

Hence, part of the problem. The officer's life has been elevated so much higher than the people they are supposed to be protecting. Is that logical? It certainly reduces his hero status, IMO.
If I had taken the job, which I've had considered once, part of the motivation was the elevation to hero status through good deeds and the respect of the community. Sadly, these actions, while still present, have been tarnished by the actions of a growing nefarious presence.
What happened to a gov't OF the people FOR the people? The gov't IS supposed to be us, NOT someone acting as if we're the enemy.

None of you have addressed my question as to what would you have done if you were in the place of the Aurora police? How would you have gone about apprehending an armed and dangerous suspect in that situation?

Don’t waist you time here. These guys have no clue about constitutional law, founded suspicion and probable cause.

These knee-jerk idiots would rather spend hours and hours searching youtube and tin-foil hat web sites than actually read case law and statutes to educate themselves. To them the exception is the norm and they believe every word the read from every anonymous internet “expert”.

The same way road blocks are done everywhere else. Stop traffic and let each car through one by one. No need to point a shotgun in the face of every person you come across. The actions of the police were hasty and they are very lucky they didn't accidentally shoot someone. In the end they are running the risk of having their case thrown out for violating the constitution. Remember "O.J." and what happens when a cop doesn't follow the rules....


Feel free to start a "good cop" thread and I'll post a video showing an officer risking his life to save a stranger. (no sarcasm) I fully respect officers that don't have a huge head accompanied by a teetering chip on their shoulder. This thread merely points out that the world isn't all puppy dogs and sunshine and sometimes cops are confused about their level of authority.

If you Sir, don't have a problem with a cop refusing to give a complaint form to a citizen, well then I'd consider you to be part of the problem. And with that I hope your son, daughter, wife, etc are never wronged by the law, because I'd hate to know that you're living with the fact that you've supported the act by walking lock step with those doing the abusing....

Part of my issue, and this has more to do with the originator of this thread than you, is the constant posting of everything that's wrong with this countries government. As if bitching makes one a Patriot. Also, given the number if LEO's in this country the number who are actually abusing their position is quite small, not that this gives them any right to do so but it's still a small percentage. Finally, the bank robber was armed, a traffic roadblock would work if you are after drunk drivers but in the case of an armed crimal, who you must assume will use force, then I will give the LEOs the benefit of the doubt. This isn't giving LEOs a blank chech, everyone should ve held accountable for their actions and if the city of Aurora investigates this and finds they violated policy or citizens rights then the officers should be held responsible. Sometimes tough choices have to be made and sometimes the only choices are ones people find disturbing. Be thankful you don't have to be put in that situation.

An ignorant populace is how the fed gov't has become so corrupt. The MSM has been their tool to keep us ignorant. It's up to the citizens to right it by educating one another.

Never said everything is fine but I also don't think everything is going to hell. This nation has problems but it also has many positive things going for it. I also don't think we are living in a police state. While there are abuses in the systemic is no where near a police state. Go to Burma if you want to see a police state.

Isn't what they did an unlawful detention? I can understand escorting people away from the intersection and having them cleared off scene, but guns in the face and handcuffed!?!

A problem I see is that some LEO have developed the belief that a criminal must be caught at any expense. This includes situations like the above, high speed chases and shoot outs. I suspect it has more to do with the current realities they live with. Smaller budgets, less officers per capita, more violent crime, negative feelings from the public.

In the future, it could be one kid playing a video game, attached to a drone, making the decisions. Death from above, it's working in Pakistan why not here ? No roadblocks, armed detention, etc... Just track the suspect out the door and strike once clear of civilians. Or, track the ISP to an address for the incriminating Youtube videos and file a counter complaint with a HE round. Simple justice lives. Everyone's happy again, or else.
