Where to spear???

As I have been down in Key Largo for the past couple weeks, I have picked up spearfishing! I use a 4ft pole spear, and for Father's Day I got my dad a 5ft pole spear. We are both PADI Advanced Open Water divers and we both can free dive decently(I have been getting some practice). Since I would like to be able to go spearing with him, I need to know "where?". Where should we go?
We live in Melbourne, FL so I was thinking somewhere near vero or ft pierce.
We also don't have a boat sooo we would either need to go off the beach or find an open spot.
I've heard of Pepper Park in Ft. Pierce. Is that a good place to go off the beach?

Any help would be much appreciated, and feel free to PM responses if you would like as well! thanks!

Re: Where to spear???

I was thinking something off the beach that would be a little less costly. hahaha But I'll take that one into consideration. Thank you!

Re: Where to spear???

Not really any freediving north of Port Canaveral...too far out to the reef and too deep for "most". I'm sure you will get a lot of suggestions from the folks south of Boynton Bch area...... Good luck

yes everyone has their own spots but I hunt 300 yards out off of a private vero beach Vis isn't always good; however, it kicks ass

Re: Where to spear???

Check out tcskindivers.com we are a local group of guys that do alot of spearing along the treasure coast. facebook page as well.. pepper is great on a good vis day, which the vis is shot right now, south beach is good. I know vero is good, but vis is suspect.
The further south you go the better chance of having good vis, but the more fished it is as well, so less shootable fish.
tcskindivers also has a boat tourny coming up as well.
Good Luck!

Re: Where to spear???

Thank you for the responses, helps a lot! Now if we were to go off the beach how should we keep the fish? Just on the stringer, like we would do off a boat or have a floatline at the top of the water? any advice?

Re: Where to spear???

keep them out of the water...rig a boogie board with a 5 gal bucket or something similar...else you get taxed by the grey suits
