Re: Newbie looking for advice!
deffinatly take a class, BUT... make sure you show up with the right gear.. i just took an FII Level 1 class with brandon gross and learned ALOT in the safety department but was personally upset with how poorly i did in the open water portion . i blame it partially on my gear. the thermocline was pretty cold at around 10m or just beyond and i was in a wetsuit with no hood. i had plenty of air left and no issues equalizing. Before the class i was doing 1 minute dives at 40ft but that instant freezing shock to my head made it impossible to tell my body to continue to dive deeper into the cold water.
So bottom line its ok to take a class early in your diving career. yes you will probably comprehend more after a couple years of learning and diving but i think aslong as you have the proper gear for the darn sport its just fine to take a class early on. -Kenny |

Re: Newbie looking for advice!
Take a freediving class. It will streamline all of the trial and error process...

Re: Newbie looking for advice!
30 isnt bad at all buddy. I figure if your max is 30' then you can normally hunt at around 15-20' or so? Thats definitely good enough for most fish. People are right the FII classes will help a ton but most people just cant afford those. Just keep diving and your body will get more and more conditioned to it.
As far as hunting skill, just try to dive as much as possible with older more experienced guys and soak up as much info as possible. Watch what they do. Maybe even join a club in your area. San Diego freedivers and the Pistoleros have some great guys in them that anyone could learn a lot from. Just put you top priority in safety. Its no myth that people really die from pushing their limits too hard. Let it come |

Re: Newbie looking for advice!
Dove mission bay jetty today overall it was a fun dive. 7-9 ft visibility except when jet skiers would come around shooting up sand everywhere..(they ended up getting tickets). Was looking for halibut but didnt see any. Few cabs n opals. Hit me up if you guys would like to go out forma dive. Currently using a pole spear. Always willing to learn from others kinda not really new to this sport been on a few dives in Santa Barbara
