Santa Cruz Isl.1/23/05 report

Not too much to report except unbelievable crossings both ways!
It was flat calm and glassy both ways. Go figure
Tommy7 are you reading this!

We dove a few spots, we all got our limits of scallops, I shot a nice
calico bass, saw some huge sheephead, 25#+ we could have sunk
the boat w/them, 15# and over, seriously! I personally saw at least
100 over 15#, a couple of guys on the boat were thinking about
shooting some of the larger ones but nobody was sure if they are
open to us spearo's or not. I looked at the regs but they are too
hard to interpret. Anyone know for sure? we saw a couple of nice
big bugs but just could not quite get to them(next time )

Let's hear some more stories!

Scotty,

What boat (name, type, etc. ) were you on?

Can you tell us approx location?

I heard there was a huge amount of lumber in the water. Is it true?

Re: Santa Cruz Isl.1/23/05 report

Scotty-

I'm 99% that they are fair game all year to all divers whether entering from a boat or shore and also open year round to shore based anglers.

see pages 13 and 14 of regs:

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/oceanfish2005.pdf

specifically footnote 3 page 13

They could change these at anytime with little to no warning so you have to keep checking.

Thanks for the report Scott. You make me feel guilty for not hauling my ass out there and trying it, but not as guilty as I would feel if you had seen some white sea bass.

I have a crew available for Wednesday, but of course the forecast for Wednesday is for rain with 4 to 6 foot swells.

Sigh!

Re: Santa Cruz Isl.1/23/05 report

Hi Scotty,
Yeah I am reading this and wishing that I could have got out too ;(
Sounds like you guys had a killer day, but like Bill said if you had seen or brought back "any" seabass I would be beside myself. I just got back from Miami, I was there doing a trade show for my brother and had alot of catching up to do when I got back. I was hoping/planning on going tomorrow but it aint happening.
Well, glad you got out and saw alot of wildlife............. OH, BTW there is a ("RUMOR") that a couple of guys took a couple big fish in your back yard...any truth to it??

Any of those closed species: rockfish, sheepies, etc. are open to divers.

Re: Santa Cruz Isl.1/23/05 report

painkilla,
We were on my buddies Livesay, called "Sunbum" its the biggest 22' boat I've ever been on. You could have five divers on it and no one would get in any others way!

Bill,
So sorry you can't get out, I know how you feel! soon, very soon!

Tommy7,
pm me and give me details and I'll follow up.
