Maui Dive Report 01/24/05

Took a visiting California diver out today. We went all the way into La Perouse across the "Hawaiian Rubicon" trail in a jeep. Got there and had decent vis, but no fish. the whales were in close, so I'm not sure if there is something to do with that. We called it quits and decided to check out a North Shore spot. This spot was flat despite high surf. Got in the water and saw fish everywhere. Took 2 papio (jack trevally- 3 & 5 lb) and he got an Uhu (parrotfish 3lb). Actually passed up alot of fish. I only took the papio because the wife asked for it. And when she's happy.........

No pics, we were too quick to cook em up. I think I'll start carrying an underwater camera with me though. That way it's there and accessible before the filet knife comes out.

Do you eat Jack trevally? Or is that the same as a Jack Crevell?

Papio is Trevally under 10 lbs. the smaller size makes them more tender. The Japanese sushi restaurant's sell it as "Shimaaji" and charge a pretty penny for it.

Nope not the same fish. I talked to a couple of fishermen while I was there and they showed me some papio. It's in the jack family but a different species, they said they eat them but I have no idea how they taste. I guess some people eat Crevalle too, but I never had the courage.

Thanks, I think that Jack Crevalle would be alright to eat if you could just get passed the dark red meat. Maybe you could smoke it over some hickory or something.
