After work dive on Maui's north shore

Went for an after work dive yesterday afternoon, so I had only two hours in the water.
Stone shot, didn't even twitch. 80 pounds even.
Had to hike up the rocky streambed and then up the 250 foot cliff in the dark, with the fish in my backpack, plus my 20 plus pounds of gear. Let me tell you, climbing a cliff in the dark carrying over 100 pounds was an experience.

This was on a reef that extends out from a point. It's relative shallow, ranging from about 50 to 70 feet. It's probably a 1.5 mile swim round trip.

Willie I have to ask. Where did you dive. We hit the water at the Blue Tile Roof and got a UHU and Palani. We went out to Peahi today to dive (cliff hike down) but the water was too junk and windy. Wife didn't want to do it.

Nice fish Willie. I've yet to land one that big on my rod and reel, let alone spear one. Right on braddah!

Re: After work dive on Maui's north shore

Thanks, everyone! Stodelle, I won't give up my favorite ulua spot that easily! Hehehehe! Seriously, though, will give you a call if there is room on the boat next time we head out to the buoys or head up north.

Thumbs up Re: After work dive on Maui's north shore

Dude, you need to move to Florida where we barely have any hills, let alone cliffs. Bring a bunch of those Ulua's with you too.

Nice freaking job!

Re: After work dive on Maui's north shore

Willie,

If you can get an white sea bass just a pound heavier than that ulua when you come in May, you will have a world record and all you will have to do is pull it into the boat- no hills to climb. I'm counting on you to bring me luck and show me how to do it, but this may be your last chance.

To all- when he came for an overnight trip to Catalina in October, we spent the night in Cat Harbor, a place that I guaranteed was always slick as glass. We had an unusual south wind with driving rain coming straight up the harbor, and it was absolutely the scariest night I've ever spent in a boat. We were bouncing up and down as if we were on a plane, and I spent most of the night sitting up to make sure our anchor wasn't dragging or that one of the larger boats upwind of us didn't drag down on us. I'm not superstitious, but this ulua does give me more confidence about another trip with him.

Just show me the way, Willie.

Well, I've gotten my scary moment at sea for this year over with already.

We went out yesterday since it was a holiday. We had some battery problems, so we brought the spare and jumped the main. Checked DD buoy, but it was dead. We went in to shore to check ulua houses, and anchored up. This place has a point of land that juts out to sea, and the wind was pushing us toward it such that the boat was perpendicular to the point. Since the swell was pretty big, I anchored a lot deeper than normal. The boat was in 40 to 45 feet of water. On the outside, there is a pinnacle on which the waves were breaking, but because the water got deep again, by the time the swell reached us, the waves were only cresting on the point.

I wanted to watch the conditions before we got in, so we sat for some time counting the breaking sets, which although big, were nowhere near the boat. All of a sudden, out of the blue, comes this just massive wave that peaks up and breaks from the outside of the point all the way to the pinnacle. It continues towards us, with no sign of letting up. Now remember, we're tightly anchored, with the engine off, and this wave is coming at us broadside. It's at least twice the size of the biggest sets that we had seen.

I jump up, turn the key, and (thank God) the engine starts. I pull the boat forward to get a little slack and turn it to face the wave. As we get pulled up the face at a greater than 45º angle, I gun it, and we somehow punch through the wall of white water. The boat then comes slamming down the other side. We frantically pull up the anchor and haul ass with it dragging behind the boat. There was only that one freak wave, though.

The wave was big enough to have completely turned the boat end for end (hell, it broke in 40+ feet of water). Amazingly, the anchor line didn't pull us under and we somehow made it through that mass of white water. If I hadn't of been able to turn the boat and punch it, we would have lost the boat for sure.

Needless to say, we went somewhere else and dove in a very protected bay.

I don't want this much excitement in my life, thank you very much.

Re: After work dive on Maui's north shore

Geez Willie. That was scary. I'm glad you made it.

I hate to be personal, but I can't help recalling that the night I spent in my boat with you last October was the most exciting night I ever spent in a boat (I'm referring to the weather, not to his Speedo).

I hope this isn't part of a pattern?

I guess I'll find out when you come again in April and May.

God, I hope not!

I've had to beat off big sharks (and I'm talking sharks with 55-gallon drum diameter bodies) and I'd rather do that any day than face that wave again.

That really scared the crap out me.
