Large carbo... how much does it weigh?

A guy who frequents stump pass marina caught a large black grouper today. We did not have a scale that could weigh this beast. I tell you what this sucker had girth! I just figured you would all like seeing a pic of a dead fish and put in your two cents as to how much it weighs. Later.

Re: Large carbo... how much does it weigh?

no one around here had a scale that would go heavy enough.

You might want to slap it up on FS too, if you are trying to get a guesstimate of the weight. To throw another one out there...

102# gutted

It's a beautiful catch, assuming he was fishing for it. How deep was he?

Why not stand on a normal human scale while holding the fish.... then step on by yourself..... subtract the differance and you have the wieght of the fish.....

Just my $.02......

Re: Large carbo... how much does it weigh?

I've seen one or two carbo's over the last year or two. That dude is not a real big guy and that fish is off the ground and only to his shoulders....my guess is no more than 80 lbs.... 100lbs. carbos are nearly 6 ft in length. Still, one hell of a fish! To catch one like that on a stand up rig IS a big deal....congrats to the angler.

Re: Large carbo... how much does it weigh?

I thought there was a formula using the length and girth to figure out the weight. I'll have to search for it, unless, somone knows it.

Re: Large carbo... how much does it weigh?

length times girth squared divided by 800 ((L x G x G)/800)

Re: Large carbo... how much does it weigh?

There is also a species specific length to weight calculator: http://www.gsmfc.org/sasweb/fishsize.htm

It says that a 6 foot (72") black grouper is 180.8 pounds. I have known it to be off in the past.

Re: Large carbo... how much does it weigh?

I guessed it at 98 or so... the fish might not have been long bu tit was almost three times as thick as the guy who caught it. All I can say it was caught on a beeliner. All the guys on the boat gave conflicting depths and distances... but I know where it was caught. I will be diving it soon. Pictures from the trip coming soon
