Sampson Tip Photo Request
Hey guys,
I was talking with Shootafish2 earlier today, and he mentioned that he used to have an old tip made by Sampson. He said that it was unlike any of the modern day tips(e.g., it was similar to a slip-tip, but also had three barbs). Do any of you have a photo of one of these types of tips? Perhaps some of you salty and seasoned divers? I'm curious to see what one of these tips looked like. I read a little bit about Herb Sampson, and it sounds like he was quite the man when it came to inventing stuff for spearing. Thanks, Lou Last edited by watermanlou; 09-27-2005 at 09:50 PM. |

Re: Samson Tip Photo Request
I've found various references to him on DeeperBlue, Freedive.net and other assorted websites. I'm always interested in the exploits of those who went as pioneers before me. Hence, my interest here.

Re: Samson Tip Photo Request
I had a couple of the tips, but I lost one in a black sea bass and let the other one go with the Sampson gun I gave to the spearfishing museum in Huntington Beach. I don't think I have any photos.
But roughly, it had three knife edges sort of like an arrowhead, and each edge had a flopper on it. The cable went back into the body that was screwed onto the shaft, and then came out through a hole in the side of the body, and had a crimp on the rear end of the cable like an Alexander or Aimrite tip. I'm not sure if it was as clean a tip as some of the modern ones, but if you ever got it into a fish, it wasn't coming back out.
