Re: Henley pole spear

Henley are great pole spears. Florida Freedivers carrys them. I have a friend who uses one and he likes it. The Henley in the picture on E Bay is not a complete Henley. It is way too short. The regular size Henley that sells for $200 is longer. You can also buy several smaller pieces for a Henley so you can shorten it and it looks like someone has done that. I wouldn't pay anywhere near full Henley price for it, but if you want a short "putter" for in around rocks and back in caves it would work, but so would many other short pole spears for a lot less money.

Re: Henley pole spear

I personally own a Henley Pole Spear specifically for the Bahamas. It's great, but bulky. $200 + bucks and very high quality. Will last for years

Jaysun:

If you ever need another quality pole spear, get a Cockerham. It costs about $120 and I think it is better than a Henley. IMHO

Re: Henley pole spear

I picked-up the pole spear from ebay for 80 bucks. I also bought the 41" extension from Florida Freedivers for 55 bucks delivered. $142 to the door...a little expensive, but better than $234 plus shipping.

Chico:

With the extension you got from Mike, what is the overall length of the spear?

Don't know yet as I have received neither shipment. As soon as I get all of the parts I will let you know. It sounds like you have a lot of experience with pole spears...anything that would have made your life easier when you got started hunting with them?

Fedex man just showed up The pole spear measured 55" from bottom to spear tip. The extension is 41" for a total of 96" or 8'...is that about the right length? Vis will be 20-60 ft regularly around the reefs I will be visiting.

Re: Henley pole spear

Chico:

That is the right length for a Henley if I remember correctly. If you notice, the Henley has a larger diameter band on it than most off-the-shelf pole spears. That is a good thing. You need the extra power of the diameter and the length to offset the mass of the larger pole.

The best thing you can do now is get out and start using it as much as possible. You need to learn its killing distance, which will partly depend on how far you can pull the rubber and hold it. If you can put the Henley slip tip into a fish, though, it will hold. That slip tip is really wicked. You will also need to learn how to traverse the spear when tracking a fish. It will be slower than smaller diameter pole spears.

So what you need now is experience. That's the fun part. Good luck. Remember, with that type of pole spear don't be afraid to go for big fish. The Henley can handle just about anything you can put it into.

I see what you are saying about those slip tips...wicked indeed.

This may be a stupid question, but here it goes anyways...how do you repower the Henley? I was looking closely at the hole where rubber the goes through and I was amazed that anyone could get the band through the hole once, let alone twice!

Re: Henley pole spear

I own a Henley chicotrout. Pull the band in both directions w/ both hands, so it thins-out; you should be able to easily replace the band.
