Big Seabass?

I have heard from two different customers in the last two days that a guy shot an 80+ lb seabass off of laguna . Anybody else heard about this?
Thanks, Mike

Re: Big Seabass?

I'd have to call BULLS*&T on that until I see the dead body. Like Osama or Pancho Villa. Until he's dead in front of you, the legend lives on!!! Besides, some Fathomiers STILL cry and bitch that my 50lb. seabass from Laguna was not real. So those crybabies are gonna throw 10 fits if they have to accept an 80lb'er out of there. I know they are there, but I haven't seen one yet....

Please tell us the story about the 50lber and how the members bitched. It's slow and we need stories.

Re: Big Seabass?

Was that the story you told at the club meeting? Didn't the largest fish for last year come from there? I thought it did and it was a WSB over 50 pounds. Maybe we just have to schedule some club dives there and see for ourselves.
Now that you mention it there's more down there than anywhere else. That's real odd being that there's absolutely no sharks and some of the cleanest water you can find in California.

It's up to the individual to decide on the level of his or her contributions
That didn't last long did it Spinal Tap? I thought that was some good advice you had.

I took the fish some ?? 5 yrs ago at Cress st, Laguna. I had watched bait and small seabass there all summer, and had seen a few good fish. So, sundown, off work early, I hit it. Saw 3 fish go over the reef, middle fish was the one. I plunked it, and then swam it to the beach after fighting the riptide. I knew it was big, but had no idea.
Got home, weighed it, and it pegged my Berkley 50lb. scale. Used the house scale, and it was a solid 51-52 each time. It was pitch black out, and we took 2 pics. One inside, one outside. No flash, as I didn't own any good cameras at the time. The club certified scale was in North LA, locked in a dive shop. I had the fish,2 pics, and witnesses, so I filleted the thing and went to bed. Club members who wave no love loss for me cried foul, tried to bump my fish. I brought my lousy pics. They cried some more. My fish withstood 2 different votes, and the end outcome was some guys actually quit coming around over the whole mess. Screw 'em, they were crybabies anyway. It died. Then, we had new requests for pics of fish last yr, this year for records. I warned it is not such a necessity if you have witnesses, as I had already had that fight. Numbskull thinking was held to a minimum, and we have a decent setup for the records now. Only need to submit pics for top tier fish, and the pics don't have to be any stellar quality. Which I can deal with.
Well, last month, 2 of the top fish salesmen of the month brought my fish up AGAIN, while crying about rules crap regarding some OTHER fish. It was an issue that ONE of them had been AGAINST only 2 weeks before, and I was actually FOR the diver/ fish in question. Let's just say I DO NOT LIKE when the rules get changed after the fact, and then they want to back tax you.
SO, the fish was allowed to stay, and so will the "other " records, including some big fish which were second shot by other divers. The way some things have gone in the last year and a half, I am no longer surprised by anything.
IMHO, the next record seabass can easily come from 6 places, and some of the easy fav's are La Jolla, County line, and Salt Creek. I am leaving the other 3 top spots out of this, go find them yourself. Second tier spots are PV, Cress st, Reef point-ish, and O'side. Note, these are all coastal. I believe the next giant will be off the beach. So, rules and pics suck ass, and I am sticking to that!!!

I don't get it. I sense some inuendo at hypocrisy, but I'm too overfed to catch it. Feel free to clarify here or by PM.

Re: Big Seabass?

I guess that's not the story I heard this year. Didn't you get a couple over fifty pounds this year. That might make a good news letter article also. Making sure members know where there's a local certified scale and other members in the area to come witness it. Will you be at the polespear meet next weekend?

Re: Big Seabass?

Sorry Spinal Tap I was typing when you posted. I'm a member of the Fathomiers and would hate to see an opportunity for some people to start bagging on us like whats happening to the Neptunes. I think the Fathomiers are a great club who help out members and none members alike. I know Rojodiablo would not do it on purpose but I was foreseeing possible disaster. There was no innuendo at hypocrisy just concern that your innocent question could go south. Hope that clarifies.

Re: Big Seabass?

Damn Mike, nice calicos!!!! A newsletter article on the next record??? Go ahead and write one up; I'll post it!!! And let's just say if you name one of the 3 other spots I feel will hold the record, I will edit it out of your story. And then, you'll know exactly where to go!!! As to the guys I am picking on, remember that without names it is all in fun, and I am dicking with you 'cause I like you, and I am bored as hell!!! I have to work straight through 'till next Sunday, for the dive. I'll be dead tired by then!!! But I'll still win....

I'm going out tomorrow to brush up on my polespear techniques. Not going to scout the meet even though Ive never dove there. I'm just going to follow your tired ass around and jump your spots.
