Biller power upgrade
Does anyone know about what the maximum power a 54" biller trigger can handle? I'm thinking about increasing the power and have heard that too much will cause a lock up. Thanks for any info.

Re: Biller power upgrade
How much power are you talking about? How old is the gun?

Re: Biller power upgrade
The gun is new. It may have enough power as is. I'm looking for enough power to shoot big groupers in the 20 to 30 lb range. I haven't shot the gun yet so I'm not sure what it is capable of. If I do need more power I was just wondering what would be a good upgrade? Thanks for the response.

Re: Biller power upgrade
I shot a 48 sea hornet, I think they use the same trigger mech, and mine locked up with three 5/8 by 16 inch bands. Hope that helps!

Re: Biller power upgrade
Two strong 5/8" bands are enough when line rigged, and one will handle it for a freeshaft. Probably in stock, I'd go 22" x 5/8". Or my favorite, 26" x 3/4" would probably be a special order. Two of these used to bind my 52 Sea Hornet trigger slightly, so I used a single just for freeshafting. Depending on the model you bought it may have come with 9/16" bands. Take the gun to a store and try pulling a few heavy bands. Don't actually cock the gun, just see how they feel.
And of course, you need to shoot the gun to know what's right for you. Chad

Re: Biller power upgrade
If it came with two 9/16" diameter bands just upgrade them to 5/8". You do not need 3 bands. Just learn how to get within range and don't shoot just because you can hit them shoot when you know it will go though them even after passing through a bony part like a gill plate. You may already do that but it is still good advice for anyone else who may be reading this, hell its still good advice for me.

Re: Biller power upgrade
Niether of my 54" Billers has any problems with up to 3 5/8"x24 SS cable wishbone bands.I rarely use more than 2 lineshafting tho and I freeshaft with 1 or 2 depending on how much time I have between shots.

Re: Biller power upgrade
I use 2 bands, 5/8 x 22 on my 48 Biller. No trigger problems with that. Never tried a 3rd band on it, can't say.

Re: Biller power upgrade
Over powering a gun can be just as problematic as underpowering one. Two of our 22" X 5/8" dia. bands would be plenty of power for a 48" Biller IMO. One of the most common misconceptions about adding a 3rd band to a Sea Hornet or Biller type gun is, that doing so will add significantly to the distance capability of the gun. While it may add slightly to the distance capability of the gun..........it will greatly greatly decrease the overall accuracy/consistancy of the gun, especially on longer distance shots.
Basically, no matter how much power or torque you add to a 48 gun, it is never going to shoot farther or more accurately than a properly/optimally powered 52 or 54 gun. IMO, longer distance shots are better achieved by longer guns and longer shafts. The most common mistake folks make when they buy their first gun is.........they buy a gun that is too short for their long term needs. Once they realize they made this mistake, they start banding up the gun in a futile attempt to gain distance and power. Learn to close gaps and hone your stalking techniques. But most importantly, develop the discipline to learn and recognize which fish want to get shot, and which ones don't. Chasing fish is generally a bad habit, the ones that want to get shot are the ones that are not running away. By ignoring the fish that are running away early in the dive, you might be surprised how friendly those fish may become by the end of the dive.

Re: Biller power upgrade
Kevin, it seems that I remember from another thread that someone posted a few weeks ago that Sea Hornet has redesigned their trigger so that it can handle more power. Is this true or did I read it wrong?

Re: Biller power upgrade
Sea Hornet is redisgning thier trigger to handle more pressure. Though, I don't know when it will be available. Hopefully it will be the same style/dimensions as I have two blanks and muzzles designed around the current Sea Hornet trigger. I deicided to wait for the new trigger so I can put another band hole in the muzzle.
Kevin, maybe you know, I had a question from another spearo who asked" Does the new Sea Hornet Commando have the new trigger?" and also "What is the difference between the Commando and the Pacific other than the rail?" It looks to me that the v-track is the only difference(other than the finish), unless it has the new trigger.

Re: Biller power upgrade
All Sea Hornet guns will have the new trigger.
I have not recieved one of the Commando's yet, however, it will have the new trigger. Difference? I don't know yet.
