Using a kill spike: where to stab 'em?

Hey,

I picked up a kill spike from FF a couple weeks ago and I'll have it on me for the first time tomorrow. If I do hit a fish, and it's not a stone shot, where's the best spot to do the fish in with the spike. I figure a couple inches behind the eye in that stone-shot target area, but will it be harder to try to push my way through a bony area than to find a softer spot? Maybe I should use it on the gills or the heart instead? I want to find the spot that will be the easiest and quickest to subdue the fish so I don't struggle to get it on the stringer.

I always go in at an angle right behind the gills...how long is the spike..is it a RA?

I use one I made a while back...the spike is full tang and with a 10" showing. The 10" comes in handy on larger stubborn fish.

Hit em right in the Spleen. No no jk.
Right between the eyes at a 45 degree angle.

It depends on what degree of control you have of the fish. I go for the brain from the top of the skull it I have it well handled. But if it is still green then make it bleed out with a couple of gill jabs or, like you said, go for the heart.

i use the tip of my spear once i take it out of the fish, i just put the barb in the corner of my hand and push through..i would say you should have no problem putting it in there..ya in some cases with big fish say over 30 pounds it maybe harder but still doable

That is of course after stringering it right? .......I Always stringer a fish, before taking the spear out, has been my gospel for years now, after loosing a few good fish(live and learn).

I like to brain em before I stringer them, then remove the spear. I don't mind if they twitch and such in the sand, tends to bring in other targets(usually bigger) who are more inquisitive than intelligent. "Hey, what your deal, why are you twitching around like th.....thwack...Oh now I see!"

Yep RA, I believe...nice spike....great gripping handle. Unless, you get ahold of a really big boy all bets are off just "give em hell", shove that shiney sob at an angle right behind the gills into about an inch behind his eyes and give it a few wrench arounds. I try to stick my thumb into thier gills with my left hand(right handed) and pull back as I am braining them with the right hand.....of course I have never had to do that, cuz I stone every fish I shoot at!

Hope that helps ya

Dude you stick em in the brain or in the spine if you can. Thats if you can get to those spots. If not stick them anywhere you can.. But try not to screw your filets up..

I used a tire plug tool but unfortunately lost it on the first dive I took it on. it had a sweet T handle making it very effective for driving it into a skull. they are only like 8 bucks with a nice set of tire plugs.

Re: Using a kill spike: where to stab 'em?

Hey Ironheed, that's how I was trying to roll from the get go. I had a flat head screwdriver and an icepick I sharpened up reeeeal nice, but I couldn't fashion a nice way to sheath or mount it. I had some bungees and dowels I drilled out and a couple other do-dads, but none of what I built had me convinced that I wouldn't stab myself, my buddy, or my liftbag (or all 3). This sucker cost a pretty penny, but it's all stainless and the sheath with the belt loops sold me on it.

I can't believe not one of you showed the Kill Spike on your gun, the way Dan Mcmahon punches them. This way you don't drop them while holding your gun, fish, stringer and spike. Below are the three ways they're mounted. If you only have 1 shaft and it's in a fish, this one works on a shark and you can slip your PPD on it if need be. Available in Left Mount, Right Mount and Bottom mount.

Re: Using a kill spike: where to stab 'em?

I find my Sporasub snake dagger way more effective than a spike. I can twist and wiggle the knife, severing every single nerve connecting its body to the pea sized brain. No problem. The goal is not having to use it, though.
